North Texas (23-7) claimed the second seed for the American Athletic Conference tournament after a 14-4 run through conference play. The Mean Green play their first game at the American conference tournament on Friday night when they take on No. 10 seed Tulsa (13-19) in a quarterfinal matchup at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The Golden Hurricane were 6-12 in American play and won their second-round game on Thursday. North Texas hasn’t gone to the NCAA tournament since 2021 while Tulsa’s drought dates to 2016. The winner advances to face the survivor between No. 6 seed East Carolina and third-seeded UAB in a Saturday semifinal.

The Golden Hurricane trailed by 12 early in the second half and fought their way back to beat No. 7 seed Temple 75-71 on Thursday night. Jared Garcia’s 3-pointer at the 2:19 mark put Tulsa up for good and he finished with 20 points while Dwon Odom booked 14 points and eight assists. Odom averages 13.6 points and 5.4 assists, Keaston Willis scores 13.1 points per game and Ian Smikle logs 5.4 points and 5.5 rebounds a night.

The Mean Green closed its regular season with a 66-61 loss at Temple on Sunday. Atin Wright led the offense with 18 points and Brenen Lorient tossed in 15. Wright leads the tam at 15.0 points per game, with Lorient netting 12.3 points per outing and Moulaye Sissoko averaging 7.6 points and 6.5 boards.

North Texas won this season’s lone meeting, taking a 63-44 decision at home on Feb. 19, with the Golden Hurricane still leading the series 38-16. Ross Hodge is 42-22 in his second season coaching the Eagles while Eric Konkol has a 34-59 mark in his third season at Tulsa.
