The 2025 softball season kicks off this weekend for various teams and Tennessee and Northwestern will meet on Saturday.

The 2025 women’s college softball season is upon us and several teams will head to Clearwater, Florida this weekend for the NFCA Leadoff Classic at the Eddie C. Moore Complex. On Saturday night, the No. 20 Northwestern Wildcats will take on the No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers. The Wildcats finished off the 2024 season at the top of the Big Ten standings with a conference record of 20-3 and an overall record of 35-13. The team was eliminated from Big Ten Tournament play by Indiana in a 4-3 loss, but still make it into the NCAA Regionals, ultimately losing to NCAA runners-up Texas to end their season. Northwestern brings back seven of its nine batters from the starting lineup which should make for another strong season.

The Lady Vols also won their conference last year, leading the SEC standings with an overall record of 44-12 and a record of 19-5 against SEC opponents. Similarly to Northwester, Tennessee was eliminated in the first round of the SEC tournament, losing to LSU in a close 2-1 defeat. The Vols did earn a bid into the NCAA tournament, however, and made it to the Super Regionals before losing to Alabama. The team will welcome six to this year’s roster and return a very strong group. As of January, nine Lady Vols received preseason honors with junior pitcher Karlyn Pickens leading the group with six honors. Pickens received first team All-American honors last year and will look to build upon that this season.

Northwestern and Tennessee have met a total of 14 times dating back to 1998 and the Lady Vols hold an 8-6 lead in the all-time series. Tennessee has won the last three meetings with the most recent being a 6-0 win in 2023.
