Ohio State will look to pull off an upset over Michigan State on Thursday night when the teams meet in Big Ten hockey action.

The No. 11 Ohio State Buckeyes will welcome the No. 2 Michigan State Spartans to Value City Arena in Columbus for a Big Ten matchup. The Buckeyes are currently in third place in the conference standings with a record of 8-5-1 in Big Ten play and 15-7-2 overall. Last weekend, the team took on Penn State, playing to a 6-6 draw in the first game that ended up in a shootout that went in the Nittany Lions’ favor and a 3-2 overtime loss in the second game on Saturday. Penn State struck first on Saturday with a goal in the second period, but Riley Thompson was able to tie things up with a power play goal in the third. The Nittany Lions went ahead again with just three minutes left to play, but Patrick Guzzo scored with 20 seconds left to send the game into overtime. While Penn State was able to score once more to take the overtime win, the Buckeyes were at least able to add a point to their tally.

The Spartans are at the top of the Big Ten standings with a conference record of 11-2-3 and an overall record of 20-3-3. Two of the team’s three losses came against opponents ranked in the top 10 with the most recent being a close 3-2 overtime loss to in-state rival No. 10 Michigan. The Spartans bounced back, however, and are undefeated in their last three games. Over the weekend, the team hosted No. 4 Minnesota, winning the first game handily in a 9-3 victory before tying the second game 3-3 on Saturday. Matt Basgall, Joey Larson and Tanner Kelly each scored for MSU and Trey Augustine made 15 saves between the pipes.

Michigan State and Ohio State have already met twice this season and the Spartans won both games, outscoring the Buckeyes 8-3. Tune in Thursday night to see if Ohio State can win the first of two games against Michigan State this week to get back on the winning side of things.
