Lyon is still reeling from the most dramatic of European exits as it travels to Saint-Etienne on Sunday. Watch the game live free on Fubo.

Less than 72 hours after being knocked out of the Europa League under the most dramatic circumstances imaginable, Lyon returns to Ligue 1 action with a trip to Saint-Etienne on Sunday. Les Gones were at one point 6-4 up on aggregate away to Manchester United in the quarter-finals of Europe’s second-tier competition but found themselves on the exit ramp after a chaotic final seven minutes at Old Trafford on Thursday. Nonetheless, the league table provides some cause for comfort after Lyon has fought its way back into top-four contention, while Saint-Etienne is staring at potential relegation as it sits 17th and five points from safety.

The Theater of Dreams has witnessed a long line of memorable European nights over the decades, but few come close to matching the hysteria witnessed on Thursday.

After drawing 2-2 in France one week earlier, United appeared to be coasting into the semi-finals after taking an early 2-0 lead in the second leg, only for Lyon to force extra time and then some, scoring four goals inside the 120 minutes despite being reduced to 10 men.

Ruben Amorim’s side had something to say about that, however, and Paulo Fonseca could only watch as Lyon leaked three goals in seven minutes to see his side’s continental dream fizzle out:

Fonseca won’t be back on the touchline at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard owing to the fact he’s suspended from French soccer until November for headbutting a referee, meaning assistant Jorge Maciel will step back in here.

That could spell good news for a Saint-Etienne side that has won just one of its last 13 games and conceded more goals than any other team in Ligue 1 this term (67).

Lyon, meanwhile, has a prime opportunity to move as high as second in the standings, with Marseille (third) and Monaco (second) above recently showing signs of weakness.
