The Premier League weekend gets underway with a Saturday morning kick-off between Aston Villa and Fulham.

Back-to-back defeats for the first time in nearly six months have put a dent in Aston Villa’s mood as the club returns to Premier League action hoping to bag three points at home to Fulham. Unai Emery’s side have suffered a string of disappointments on multiple fronts this week and host the Cottagers hoping to climb from seventh and maintain its chances of qualifying for next term’s Champions League. Fulham is just one place below but faces a daunting six-point jump to Villa as things stand, hoping to cling onto its own chances of landing a place in Europe next term.

Without getting into the weeds too much, eighth place could be sufficient to land a place in next season’s Europa Conference League, depending on the outcome of the domestic and continental tournaments.

However, Villa is considerably closer to those automatic qualifying places and will be hoping to take its future out of fate’s hands to some extent over the final four league fixtures.

After recently being knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals, Emery & Co suffered another trophy disappointment after losing to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup semis.

And what a loss it was as Oliver Glasner’s men stormed to an unexpectedly one-sided 3-0 result, leaving Villa fighting single-mindedly on the league front in the coming weeks:

The same is of course true for Marco Silva’s side and has been for some time, with the west Londoners arguably facing a more straightforward run-in.

After a trip to Birmingham, Fulham faces Everton (home) and Brentford (away) before ending its campaign at home to Manchester City.

For Villa, meanwhile, a trip to Bournemouth before taking on Tottenham (H) and Manchester United (A) teams desperate to prove a few points come with a great deal of trepidation.
