Aston Villa poised to claim Champions League spot in home finale against visiting Tottenham Hotspur

Knotted with Chelsea for the final qualifying spot in next year’s UEFA Champions League, Aston Villa wraps up its home schedule on Friday looking for its eighth win in the last nine English Premier League fixtures as it welcomes Tottenham Hotspur FC into Villa Park where Spurs have left Birmingham victorious in four of its last five visits. Tottenham is winless in its last five EPL matches and hasn’t won on the road since a 4-1 drubbing of Ipswich Town back in late February but did earn a point in its last away fixture settling for a 1-1 draw at West Ham United earlier this month.

Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins has a team-high 16 goals this season, having scored in three of his last five caps including the lone goal in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Bournemouth. Watkins, in his fifth season with Villa, has scored 11 or more goals in every campaign since joining the Birmingham side in 2020 and is now just three goals away from equaling his career high of 19 set last season. The 29-year-old forward has been rumored to be on the move this summer after Arsenal attempted to acquire the England native back in January but failed to meet Villa’s transfer fee demands.

With a career-high 11 goals this season, Spurs forward Brennan Johnson leads Tottenham in scoring despite being held without a goal or an assist in his last four matches. The 23-year-old Wales native has twice scored two goals in a game this season and netted a goal in Tottenham’s 4-1 home win over Villa back in early November.

Seven of the last eight meetings in this series have seen three or more goals scored including each of the last three played at Villa Park.
