Minnesota Frost 1 win away from a 2nd straight Walter Cup as they host the Ottawa Charge in Game 4 of the PWHL Finals on Monday evening

For the second straight year, the Minnesota Frost entered the Professional Women’s Hockey League playoffs at the No. 4 seed and are once again poised to hoist the Walter Cup. The Frost hosts Game 4 of the PWHL Finals at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul on Monday evening with a 2-1 series lead over the Ottawa Charge, who became the second straight No. 3 seed to get to the Finals. Defending champion Minnesota ground out a triple-overtime victory in Game 3 on Saturday to set the stage for a potential title clinching on home ice.

After defender Lee Stecklein tied the game for the Frost 2:58 into the second period, the teams played scoreless hockey until Katy Knoll lit the lamp at 9:57 of the third overtime to lift Minnesota to a 2-1 victory. Maddie Rooney stopped 35 shots in the win, while the game-winner came a little more than a minute after the Frost killed off a minor penalty.

The Charge took the lead 11:38 into the game on Emily Clark’s third goal of the playoffs but never scored again. Gwyneth Philips made 45 saves in the losing effort. Clark leads Ottawa in the postseason with three goals and five points while Brianne Jenner and Rebecca Leslie have two markers each. Philips has started all seven postseason games in net and has a 1.17 goals-against average and .953 save percentage.

Stecklein’s four goals and eight points are the most in the playoffs, while Michela Cava and Britta Curl-Salemme each have three goals in the postseason. Sophie Jaques and Taylor Heise have seven points apiece. Rooney is unbeaten in four starts, with a 1.97 GAA and .921 save percentage.
