Minnesota Frost can jump into 2nd place with a win over the Ottawa Charge on Tuesday night

The Minnesota Frost (12-7-4, 35 points) are in a tight battle with the Toronto Sceptres and Boston Fleet for the second through fourth spots in the Professional Women’s Hockey League and can leapfrog both clubs into the No. 2 spot on Tuesday night with a win over the Ottawa Charge (8-9-4, 27 points) at TD Place in Ottawa. The Charge come in eight points out of a playoff spot with nine games remaining after missing the inaugural postseason for the new league in 2024. The Frost are the defending Walter Cup champions after getting into the playoffs as the No. 4 seed.

Minnesota comes off a 2-1 overtime victory over the Sceptres in Toronto on Sunday. Kendall Coyne Schofield scored the game-winner 2:39 into the extra session after Brooke McQuigge put the Frost up 1-0 just 5:26 into the game. Coyne Schofield moved into a tie for third place in the PWHL with her 10th goal and is also tied for third with 21 points. Maddie Rooney is 8-4-3 in net with a 1.96 goals-against average and .914 save percentage.

Ottawa last played on Friday, taking a 5-0 thumping from Minnesota in a PWHL Takeover Tour matchup in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Frost took a 3-0 first-period lead and never looked back as the Charge were outshot 26-19. Emerance Maschmeyer was yanked after allowing three goals on seven shots in the first period. Tereza Vanišová has a team-high nine goals while Emily Clark has seven markers and a team-best 14 points. Maschmeyer is 6-7-3 with a 2.66 GAA and .912 save percentage.

The teams have split their four meetings this season, with the Frost taking a 5-2 win at home on Dec. 19. Ottawa set a PWHL record with eight goals in an 8-3 rout at home on Feb. 13 and scored a 1-0 victory at Minnesota on Jan. 21. The teams’ final meeting will be in Ottawa on April 30, after the international break for the World Championships.
