The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (9-7) opened their six-game series on Tuesday with a victory over the visiting Norfolk Tides (7-9) at 121 Financial Park. The series continues on Wednesday night between the Jumbo Shrimp, the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, and Norfolk, representing the Baltimore Orioles. With Baltimore’s top prospect, Jackson Holliday, now in the Majors, the top prospect with the Tides is corner infielder Coby Mayo, ranked No. 28 in baseball according to MLB Pipeline. The Marlins’ top every day player at Jacksonville is outfielder Victor Mesa Jr., while right-hander Max Meyer, No. 3 in their organization, is also with the Jumbo Shrimp.

Mesa’s walkoff single in the ninth inning gave Jacksonville a 4-3 victory in Tuesday’s opener. He also opened the scoring with a solo homer in the fourth, finishing 3-for-4. Jonah Bride had an RBI double in the fifth and Jonathan Davis stroked an RBI base hit in the sixth. Mesa is slashing .346/.414/.654 with two home runs and five RBIs.

Livan Soto tied the game for Norfolk with a two-run shot in the eighth after Ryan McKenna got Norfolk on the board with a run-scoring single. Mayo went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, lowering his slash line to .348/.403/.652 with five homers and 11 RBIs, while snapping an 11-game hitting streak.

Left-hander John Means prepares to make his fourth rehab start for Norfolk after sustaining a flareup in his surgically repaired left elbow back in October. He has allowed 10 runs in seven innings with nine strikeouts. The Jumbo Shrimp did not declare a starter for Wednesday night yet.
