A solid 1st day in tough conditions in New York has Spain leading heading into Day 2 of the New York Sail Grand Prix.

Spain, buoyed by a win in Fleet 1, takes a solid five-point lead into Day 2 of the New York Sail Grand Prix. Four races are set for Sunday before the winner-takes-all, three-boat final. It is SailGP’s third visit to New York and marks the sixth event of the competition’s fifth season. Spain, helmed by Diego Botín, is the defending champion after unseating Australia and Tom Slingsby’s three-year reign atop the circuit. This is the first race weekend for SailGP since the California doubleheader in Los Angeles and San Francisco in March after the Rio de Janeiro event was cancelled in May.

Spain took Fleet 1 by a 14-second margin over New Zealand, with crews reduced to three members for the first race before being increased to four for the second and third. Rockwool Den (Denmark) finished third in the opening race. An entirely different trio of boats reached the line ahead of the field in Fleet 2, with Bonds Flying Roos (Australia), Mubadala Brazil and France finishing 1-2-3. The Australians narrowly avoided a collision with the Brazilian boat at the second gate but finished ahead by such a wide margin that the penalty did little damage.

New Zealand, Denmark and Spain were the top finishers in Fleet 3, when dropping wind conditions led many of the crews to struggle. The Kiwis lapped the final fleet in the third race, a first in SailGP’s history. Spain comes into Sunday with 25 points in the event, with France next with 20 and New Zealand and Denmark each at 19. Brazil and Australia each have 17 points, with Switzerland and Ger Deutsche Bank (Germany) next with 11. Canada (10), Emirates GBR (7), United States (6) and Red Bull Italy (3) round out the field.

Australia came to New York with a one-point lead over Great Britain in the season standings and three points clear of Spain. New Zealand is four points back and Canada had a five-point gap in a tight championship battle that has seen five different winners in the five events so far.
