No. 8 seed San Jose State tips off the Mountain West tournament on Wednesday against 9th-seeded Wyoming.

San Jose State (14-18) comes off a win in its regular season finale, finishing 7-13 in Mountain West Conference play to gain the eighth seed for the conference tournament. On Wednesday, the Spartans tip-off the tournament against No. 9 seed Wyoming (12-19) at the Thomas & Mack Center in suburban Las Vegas. San Jose State hasn’t played in the NCAA tournament since 1996, while the Cowboys were a March Madness squad in 2022. Wednesday’s winner moves to the quarterfinals on Thursday against top-seeded New Mexico.

The Spartans blasted visiting Fresno State 92-68 on Saturday afternoon to close the regular season. Donovan Yap Jr. poured in 30 points, Jermaine Washington added 19 points and Robert Vaihola finished with 13 points, 19 rebounds and three blocked shots. Josh Uduje leads the team at 16.6 points per game, Latrell Davis scores 11.4 points a night and Vaihola averages 7.7 points and 7.3 boards.

Wyoming lost its fourth game in a row on March 4, dropping a 62-58 decision at Fresno State, giving up the lead with 2:27 remaining and getting outscored 9-5 in that span. Obi Agbim went for 17 points and Kobe Newton tossed in 15. Agbim is the team’s lone double-digit scorer at 17.8 points per game, with Jordan Nesbitt averaging 8.4 points and 6.8 rebounds.

The Cowboys are 22-5 in the all-time series after San Jose State swept a pair of games this season, winning 67-58 at home on Jan. 25 and taking an 82-73 win at Wyoming on Feb. 22. Tim Miles is 52-78 in his fourth season coaching the Spartans, while Sundance Wicks is in his first season on the Cowboys’ bench.
