Saudi Pro League joint-leader Al-Ittihad hosts Al-Shabab on Wednesday looking to keep its place atop the table.

Al-Ittihad’s march towards the Saudi Pro League title will undergo its latest assessment at home to Al-Shabab on Wednesday, with The Nation’s Club looking to stretch an unbeaten streak that dates back to September. Laurent Blanc’s men are undefeated in 14 games and have won 13 of those (including penalty shootouts), but anything but a win mid-week would nonetheless see them slip behind in the title chase. Reigning champion Al-Hilal is level at the top of the table as it hunts a 20th Saudi Pro League crown, but Al-Ittihad remains the best chance of stopping the Riyadh titan’s rampage.

A summer of major investment both on and off the pitch has already paid dividends in terms of on-field improvements at King Abdullah Sports City.

However, Al-Ittihad’s progress will mean little without silverware to back it up, though the additions of manager Blanc and a raft of superstar talent has steered them in the right direction.

Al-Ittihad got back to winning ways on the weekend after drawing 1-1 against Al-Fayha, delivering a brutal 4-1 win over Al-Raed to remain level on points at the top of the table.

And Real Madrid icon Karim Benzema was on hand to open the scoring in the most nonchalant manner, caressing his breakthrough volley into the back of the net with ease.

Meanwhile, Fatih Terim is a more recent arrival for Al-Shabab after only taking charge of the team this New Year, winning two and losing once since then.

The former Turkey chief was unfortunate not to be unbeaten in all three of his games at the White Lions helm to date, but a late comeback from three goals down at Al-Ahli fell just short.

Al-Shabab’s other two games under Terim each ended in 2-1 wins over Al-Fayha and Al-Riyadh, with Daniel Podence and Abderrazak Hamed-Allah scoring the goals on both occasions.

That duo will be the ones to watch for Wednesday’s visitors in Jeddah, while Al-Ittihad boasts threats across the field as it looks to make it 15 games in a row without defeat.
