Five big transfer storylines to follow in the summer window

The European season is coming to a close, which means the summer transfer window will soon dominate the soccer agenda. Speculation is already swirling over a number of potential transfers, but some transfers will naturally attract more attention than others.

Last summer, Chelsea spent over $300m on new players that took them to their worst Premier League finish since the 1993-4 season. In LaLiga, Real Madrid spent €100m on Aurelian Tchouameni and saw Casemiro depart for Manchester United. With Manchester City getting the better of Madrid, Bayern Munich, and the entirety of the Premier League, the arms race in Europe will assuredly heat up. Here are five storylines that will define this summer’s transfer window.

Five Summer Transfer Stories to Watch

Who will Lionel Messi sign for?

Paris Saint-German manager Christophe Galtier confirmed today that Lionel Messi will be leaving the Parisian club this summer, with the World Cup winner out of contract. The 35-year-old never seemed truly happy in the French capital and has been linked with an emotional return to Barcelona – Xavi Hernandez has publicly talked about his desire to see Messi back at the Catalan club.

However, Messi has other options. Inter Miami have pursued the Argentine for a long time and Messi is believed to be open to a move to Major League Soccer. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal have reportedly tabled a $1 billion offer with Messi’s representatives already agreeing a deal in principle.

Man Utd’s search for a new number nine

Manchester United have made genuine progress this season, finishing in the top four of the Premier League table, but it’s clear Erik Ten Hag needs a new number nine if the upward trajectory is to continue into next season. By all accounts, the Old Trafford club is prioritising the signing of a centre forward this summer.

Harry Kane is reportedly United’s first-choice with the England captain facing a career crossroads as he enters the final year of his contract at Tottenham Hotspur. Napoli’s Victor Osimhen could also be an option with France international Randal Kolo Muani another name believed to be on the shortlist.

Can Chelsea trim their bloated squad?

Mauricio Pochettino was confirmed as Chelsea’s new manager on Monday and the Argentine’s first job will be to identify which players he wants to use next season and which should be moved on. Chelsea have a terribly bloated squad after spending over $600m over the last two transfer windows and so now is the time for them to do some trimming.

The likes of Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and N’Golo Kante could be moved on. Pochettino might also need two or three new additions in key positions – a number nine and a new defensive midfielder would help – but the new Chelsea boss must focus on building a tighter, leaner core group.

Is Jude Bellingham destined for Real Madrid?

Jude Bellingham might not have placed his hands on the Bundesliga trophy at Borussia Dortmund, but at merely 19 years old he was the best player in the German top flight this season. The England international has countless admirers, but recent reports claim Real Madrid have jumped to the front of the queue to sign Bellingham.

Real Madrid have already started the process of replenishing their midfield after the capture of Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga in back-to-back summer transfer window. The addition of Bellingham would add to the sense Los Blancos are preparing for the future. But might Liverpool or Manchester City make a late bid to land Bellingham?

Will Liverpool find the midfielders they need?

This summer will be a pivotal one for Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp must focus on rebuilding his midfield unit which was the source of many problems for the Reds this season. For many, Bellingham was the ideal player to solve some of those issues, but the England international now appears more likely to sign for Real Madrid instead.

Liverpool don’t have the resources of some of their rivals and so they will have to be imaginative in the transfer market. Gallagher and Mount have both been linked with a switch to Anfield with Wolves’ Matheus Nunes another name on their radar. Whether or not Liverpool rebuild their midfield will have a big bearing on how next season goes for them.

The 15 Best Available NFL Free Agents of 2023

15. Abram Smith – RB

Smith, who was an undrafted rookie out of Baylor last year and spent training camp with the Saints, played in the XFL this past season, where he was the league’s top running back. In 10 games, Smith carried the ball 157 times for 788 yards, an average of 5.02 yards per attempt. He found the end zone seven times and also added 13 receptions for 91 yards.

NFL teams love young running backs, so it would be a surprise if Smith doesn’t at least land on a training camp roster. He doesn’t have the same NFL pedigree as other players on this list, but he’s an enticing young prospect who has a lot of potential.

14. Frank Clark – DE

Clark, who will be 30 when the 2023 NFL season kicks off, spent the last four years in Kansas City, where he wracked up 23.5 sacks over 58 games and forced six fumbles.

A key piece of KC’s defensive line, Clark doesn’t have the explosiveness he had earlier in his career, and no one should expect double-digit sack numbers like he had twice during his first four seasons with the Seahawks. But as a rotational defensive end, he can still contribute to a team’s success.

13. Jarvis Landry – WR

Landry’s not the player he once was, when he led the NFL in receptions back in 2017 with 112 as a member of the Dolphins. Last season, he played just nine games for the Saints, catching 25 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown.

But the 30-year-old is still a reliable veteran slot receiver who can provide some depth for a team, and while he hasn’t served as a full-time return man since his Miami days, he did field a couple of punts last year and could contribute on special teams.

12. Teddy Bridgewater – QB

While the 30-year-old quarterback’s window for being an NFL starter has passed, many teams around the league could use a reliable veteran backup at the position. Last season with the Dolphins, Bridgewater started two games, completing 62% of his passes with four touchdowns and four picks. The year before, he started 14 games for Denver and put up solid numbers, completing 66.9% of his throws for 3,052 yards with 18 touchdowns and seven picks.

In fact, Bridgewater has thrown 75 touchdowns to 47 interceptions across his 78 games played, with 65 of those being starts. He’s also added some contributions on the ground, with 11 career rushing scores.

11. Adrian Amos – S

30-year-old safety Adrian Amos started all 17 games for the Packers last season. In fact, he actually played every possible game during his four years in Green Bay. He picked off seven passes over that span and had 30 pass deflections.

The veteran safety has also been a tackling machine, recording a career-high 102 tackles last season for the Pack. He had at least 83 tackles in all of his seasons with the team.

10. Chris Wormley – DT

The 29-year-old defensive tackle struggled last season, recording a career-low 0.5 sacks. But a team looking at him in free agency is really just hoping his 2021 season is something that can be replicated.

That year, Wormley had seven sacks and 10 QB hits, as well as 51 tackles and six tackles for loss. He also had three pass defenses and a forced fumble. Wormley looked like a budding star. Could he get back to that level?

9. Leonard Fournette – RB

The 28-year-old running back was selected fourth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, but lasted just three seasons in Jacksonville, though two of those years saw him finish with over 1,000 rushing yards. He ended up playing the next three years with the Buccaneers, where he rushed for 812 yards and eight touchdowns in 2021 before struggling last year, with his yards per carry dropping from 4.5 to 3.5.

But Fournette also had a career-high 523 receiving yards last season. Once viewed as a one-dimensional back, Fournette has showcased some receiving chops over the last couple of seasons. He would be a valuable RB2 on a contending team.

8. Kareem Hunt – RB

The Browns spent the last few seasons juggling playing time between Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, but the team moved on from the 27-year-old back after last season, when he finished with 468 yards on the ground and a career-low 3.8 yards per carry.

Still, Hunt has a place in the NFL as a change-of-pace back, a good complement to a between-the-tackles starter like Chubb. He does bring some baggage with him after serving a suspension in 2019 for pushing and kicking a woman at a hotel in 2018.

7. Justin Houston – LB

34-year-old Justin Houston’s been around the NFL for a long time, but he had a resurgent season for the Ravens last year, with his 9.5 sacks being his most since 2019, though he tied his career low in tackles.

The veteran linebacker probably won’t be able to play every down for a team, but he showed in 2022 that he still has some value on passing downs as a rusher. A team looking for some rotational help in the front seven could do worse than to bring in Houston.

6. Marcus Peters – CB

Peters—who has led the NFL in interceptions once, interception yards three times and pick sixes twice—had a career-low one pick last year for the Ravens, but he still started 13 games for Baltimore. Maybe he’s not the ballhawk that he once was, but the 30-year-old defensive back still brings value to the field. He forced a pair of fumbles last year and had 47 tackles.

5. Dalton Risner – G

There’s not a ton of offensive line talent left on the market, which is why it’s surprising that Dalton Risner hasn’t signed somewhere yet.

The 27-year-old spent his first four seasons in Denver, where he committed just one holding penalty and three false starts during his time there. A member of the All-Rookie Team in 2019, Risner would be an upgrade at guard for a number of NFL clubs.

4. Matt Ioannidis – DT

The 29-year-old Ioannidis played for the Panthers last year, starting all 13 games he played. His numbers didn’t really pop on the stat sheet with just one sack, but he had nine QB hits and his Approximate Value—an all-in-one stat that Pro Football Reference uses—was the highest he’s had since 2019, and the second-highest of his NFL career. Plenty of teams could use Ioannidis on their defensive line.

3. Yannick Ngakoue – DE

After four good years in Jacksonville, Ngakoue has bounced around, playing for four teams over the past three seasons. But he remains productive, with 9.5 sacks and 16 QB hits last season for the Colts. Maybe he won’t be the star that he looked destinated to be after his 2017 Pro Bowl campaign with the Jaguars, but he’s someone you can plug into your defensive line and get good production from. It’s surprising he’s yet to find a new team.

2. Jadeveon Clowney – DE

The former No. 1 overall pick with the Texans had one of his worst seasons last year with the Browns, recording just two sacks and four QB hits. But you have to think there are teams that still think the talent’s there with Clowney, a four-time Pro Bowler who was Second Team All-Pro back in 2016 with the Texans. He has the versatility to play linebacker and defensive end, and in a role where he’d be asked just to rush the quarterback, he’d likely post much better sack numbers.

1. DeAndre Hopkins – WR

The newest player on this list to enter free agency, Hopkins was released in late May by the Cardinals. Hopkins has six 1,000-yard seasons between his time with the Texans and Cardinals, and last year he averaged 79.7 receiving yards per game over nine games—essentially, Hopkins would have sailed past 1,000 yards if he’d played 17 games.

Maybe he’s lost a step, but Hopkins is by far the best free agent on the market right now. He’s also the one most likely to be off the market soon, with a number of teams aggressively pursuing him now that he’s on the open market.

Top 10 Biggest NFL Blowouts of All Time

  • 1. 59 Points — New England Patriots 59, Tennessee Titans 0, 2009

Coming off a tough overtime loss to the Denver Broncos the week prior, the New England Patriots entered their week six matchup against the Tennessee Titans laser-focused. The results spoke for themselves, as New England would hand the Titans what is tied for the most lopsided score in NFL history since the 1970 merger, a 59-0 win for the Patriots in Gillette Stadium. The result, although surprising, wasn’t all that shocking considering Tennessee entered the matchup 0-5 while this was still a peak Tom Brady-era Patriots team. Speaking of Brady, he threw for six touchdowns that day, five of which came in the second quarter, an NFL record for touchdown throws in one quarter.

  • 2. 59 Points — Los Angeles Rams 59, Atlanta Falcons 0, 1976

The mid-1970s Los Angeles Rams were the class of the NFC West, coming off of three straight division championships and three consecutive playoff appearances. They entered their week 13 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons with an 8-3-1 record, having just defeated the New Orleans Saints 33-14. The good times would continue for the Rams in week 14 as they would obliterate the Falcons 59-0 behind 20 rushes, 121 yards and three touchdowns by star running back Lawrence McCutcheon. The Rams would go on to win their division and make the playoffs yet again in 1976 before falling in the second round of the playoffs to the Minnesota Vikings.

  • 3. 59 Points — Cleveland Browns 62, Washington Commanders 3, 1954

The Cleveland Browns were one of the dominant teams of the early ’50s in the NFL thanks to the elite play of Hall of Fame quarterback Otto Graham, who led the team to three championships (1950, 1954 and 1955) and was a three-time MVP. Cleveland made light work of the Washington Commanders in their week seven matchup in 1954, winning 62-3, which would have been the biggest blowout in NFL history had the Browns kept Washington from finding its lone field goal of the contest. It was quarterback George Ratterman who really shone that day, going 10-for-11 on his passing and throwing for three touchdowns and 208 yards.

  • 4. 58 Points — Seattle Seahawks 58, Arizona Cardinals 0, 2012

By 2012, the Seattle Seahawks were right on the cusp of turning into the perennial contender they would go on to become under Pete Carroll and behind the play of Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch and the “Legion of Boom” defense. The week 14 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals would go on to become part of Seahawks lore, as Seattle tore through its foe 58-0 thanks to eight turnovers forced by its outstanding defense (two interceptions by Richard Sherman and Bobby Wagner) and three touchdown runs by Lynch.

  • 5. 57 Points — Chicago Bears 57, Baltimore Colts 0, 1962

The week 11 matchup between the Chicago Bears and Baltimore Colts was a somewhat surprising one, as both teams were mediocre that campaign, with Chicago finishing 9-5 that season (and out of the playoffs) and the Colts 7-7. In fact, the Bears were coming off five straight seasons without a playoff appearance. So when Chicago defeated Johnny Unitas and the Colts by such a one-sided 57-0 margin, many were shocked. The star that day for Chicago was Billy Wade, who threw for three touchdowns on 23-of-32 passing to go with 328 yards. This performance may have been a sign of things to come for the Bears, however, as Chicago would win the NFL championship in 1963.

  • 6. 56 Points — Baltimore Colts 56, Green Bay Packers 0, 1958

Week six of the 1958 season saw Unitas on the other side of a historic blowout, as his Colts defeated the Green Bay Packers 56-0 to maintain their perfect record and move to 6-0 on the season. That was a brutal season for the Packers, who went 1-10-1 and wouldn’t win another game for the rest of that league year. Unitas was five-for-16 passing that day and threw for two touchdowns while the Colts’ other quarterback, George Shaw, went 10-for-13 and threw for three touchdowns of his own. Baltimore would go on to win the NFL championship that year, winning the title after “The Greatest Game Ever Played” against the New York Giants.

  • 7. 56 Points — Pittsburgh Steelers 63, New York Giants 7, 1952

A matchup between two mediocre teams in week 10 of the 1952 season saw history made as the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Giants 63-7, thanks to a masterful performance by Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Finks, who went 12-for-24 that day for 254 yards and four touchdowns for Pittsburgh. Steelers edge Dick Hensley was unstoppable as well that day, catching seven balls for 154 yards and two touchdowns, including a long reception of 60 yards.

  • 8. 55 Points — New Orleans Saints 62, Indianapolis Colts 7, 2011

Coming off a 26-20 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccanneers, the Saints demolished the Colts 62-7 in week seven of the 2011 season to improve their record to 5-2 and drop Indianapolis to 0-7. There’s debate as to how badly Indianapolis actually wanted to win that season, as it was the “Suck for Luck” campaign fans put together online to push the Colts to lose that season in order to have a chance to draft potential franchise quarterback Andrew Luck in the ensuing NFL draft. Regardless, Drew Brees was otherworldly that day, completing 31 of his 35 throws that day for five touchdowns and 325 yards.

  • 9. 55 Points — Atlanta Falcons 62, New Orleans Saints 7, 1973

The Saints were also on the losing side of a historic blowout – by the exact same scoreline, in fact – to open the 1973 NFL season when New Orleans fell 62-7 to the Falcons. Quarterback Dick Shiner led the way for Atlanta with 227 yards and three throwing touchdowns on 13 of 15 passing. Tight end Jim Mitchell was also effective on the day, catching seven balls for 111 yards while receiver Ken Burrow caught two touchdown passes. Saints quarterback Archie Manning (that last name might sound familiar) struggled on the day, going five for 13 passing with one touchdown and five interceptions.

  • 10. 54 Points — Cincinnati Bengals 61, Houston Oilers 7, 1989

An unexpected blowout took place in week 15 of the 1989 season as the Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Houston Oilers 61-7 for one of the biggest victories in NFL history. This result was somewhat surprising because the Bengals entered the matchup with a 7-7 record while the Oilers came into it 9-5, the former missing the playoffs that year with the latter qualifying for it. Either way, Bengals all-pro quarterback Boomer Esiason was great on the day, throwing for 326 yards and four touchdowns on 20 for 27 passing while wide receiver Tim McGee caught six balls for 147 yards and one touchdown.

Top 5 Biggest NFL Blowouts in NFL Playoff History

  • 1. 55 Points — Jaguars 62, Dolphins 7, 2000

The final game of Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino’s career was a 62-7 defeat to the in-state-rival Jacksonville Jaguars, the biggest blowout in NFL playoff history. The Miami Dolphins had won their wild-card matchup with the Seattle Seahawks 20-17 the week prior before the wheels fell off in the divisional playoff matchup with Jacksonville. Marino was 11 for 25 on the day with one touchdown, two interceptions and one fumble while Jaguars running back Fred Taylor had a field day, running 18 carries for 135 yards and one rushing touchdown, including a long 90-yard run.

  • 2. 48 Points — Bills 51, Raiders 3, 1991

The first of four consecutive Super Bowl appearances (and losses) for the Buffalo Bills came in the playoffs following the 1990 season, a stretch that saw Buffalo defeat the Los Angeles Raiders 51-3. The Bills were dominant on both sides of the ball that day, with Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly throwing for 300 yards and two touchdowns, running back Thurman Thomas running 25 times for 138 yards and one touchdown and Buffalo’s defense picking off Raiders quarterback Jay Schroeder five times.

  • 3. 46 Points — Giants 49, 49ers 3, 1987

The eventual 1986 Super Bowl champion New York Giants boasted one of the nastiest defenses in the NFL that year, with their divisional playoff round matchup against the San Francisco 49ers providing a great example of that, as both Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana and wide receiver Jerry Rice were knocked out of the matchup with injury as the Giants blew the doors of the Niners 49-3. Giants running back Joe Morris was unstoppable on the day, running 24 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

  • 4. 45 Points — 49ers 55, Broncos 10, 1990

Of course, the Montana-era 49ers were usually on the giving end of those lopsided results, as exemplified by the 1989 Super Bowl between San Francisco and Denver which saw the Niners come out on top 55-10. Montana and Rice were unstoppable that day, with the quarterback going 22 for 29 on passes for 297 yards and five touchdowns, and the receiver catching seven balls for 148 yards and three scores.

  • 5. 44 Points — Commanders 51, Rams 7, 1984

New Year’s Day of 1984 saw one of the biggest blowouts in NFL playoff history go down, as Washington defeated the Los Angeles Rams 51-7. The Commanders’ legendary quarterback Joe Theismann was great on the day, throwing for 302 yards and two touchdowns while receiver Charlie Brown caught six balls and 171 yards. Washington would make it all the way to the Super Bowl that year, falling to the Raiders 38-9 in Super Bowl XVIII.

Now that the 2023 NFL schedule has been released, excitement for the upcoming NFL season is beginning to build. We know the matchups. We know the bye weeks. We know that everything opens up on Thursday, September 7th when the Kansas City Chiefs host the Detroit Lions.

The only thing we don’t know: who’ll win each game.

Ahead of the 2023 NFL season, let’s look at what to expect from each of the league’s 32 teams. What will each team’s record look like when the season comes to a close?

Every NFL Team Win-Loss Predictions

We’ve gone through the 2023 NFL schedule and have picked every game of the regular season. Below, you’ll find the predicted win/loss records for every NFL team based on those picks.

Arizona Cardinals

3-14

With Kyler Murray expected to miss a big part of the season, the Cardinals are expected to start Colt McCoy for an extended period. While the addition of left guard Paris Johnson Jr. in the first round helps shore up a weakness on the offensive line, this team might have bigger concerns than its offense, as the defense allowed the second-most points in the NFL last season.

Atlanta Falcons

3-14

It’s hard to see many teams with a lower floor than the Falcons. The offense played well last season, but a lot of that was because Marcus Mariota was under center. The team is expected to go with Desmond Ridder on a full-time basis this season, and with Mack Hollins and Scotty Miller as the No. 2 and No. 3 wide receivers, this offense could be one of the league’s worst, even with rookie running back Bijan Robinson. On defense, the Falcons allowed the sixth-most yards last season and didn’t devote any pick higher than a third-rounder on that side of the ball.

Watch the NFL with Fubo: Start your free trial now!

Baltimore Ravens

11-6

With Lamar Jackson’s contract extended and the addition of Odell Beckham Jr. and first-round pick Zay Flowers, the Ravens offense should soar this season, especially with Todd Monken taking over as offensive coordinator. On the defensive end, the Ravens allowed the third-fewest points per game last season and should continue to excel behind the linebacker duo of Patrick Queen and Roquan Smith.

Buffalo Bills

14-3

As long as the Bills have Josh Allen, they’ll be contenders in the NFL. The addition of Damien Harris gives a boost to the run game, and first-round pick Dalton Kincaid gives the Bills two strong tight ends. Road games against the Bengals, Eagles and Chiefs will be tough, but the Bills have the talent to beat any team.

Carolina Panthers

8-9

In a weak NFC South, the Panthers can definitely make a run at the division title if No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young is able to pick up the NFL game quickly. By adding DJ Chark, Adam Thielen, Hayden Hurst and Miles Sanders in the offseason, the Panthers have created good conditions for Young to find early success. Adding defensive tackle DeShawn Williams and safety Vonn Bell helps shore up some issues on defense.

Chicago Bears

9-8

Last season, Justin Fields showed why he’s a top QB in fantasy football. Is this the year he shows why that’s true in real-life football as well? The Bears only finished fifth in the NFL in total yards, but part of that was because they had a weak wide receiving corps. The addition of DJ Moore should change that. Defensively, the Bears struggled as well, allowing the fourth-most yards, but the team added some good depth on that side with players like DT Andrew Billings, DE DeMarcus Walker, LB Tremaine Edmunds and LB TJ Edwards.

Cincinnati Bengals

13-4

The Bengals return their top three receivers and Joe Mixon, plus added the talented Irv Smith Jr. in free agency. Defensively, they allowed the fifth-fewest points last season. There’s no reason to think this team will fall off its perch at the top of the AFC North, even though the Ravens will be strong challengers.

Cleveland Browns

7-10

Will the Browns really not improve on last year’s record with a full season of Deshaun Watson? Maybe not. Watson looked rusty last season, completing just 58.2% of his passes and throwing five picks in six starts. There’s talent here, but the AFC North is tough and Cleveland has some difficult games on its schedule.

Dallas Cowboys

12-5

Last season, the Cowboys won 12 games for the second year in a row, but “Da Boys” drought of NFC title game appearances continued, as they last got that far in 1995, the last time the Cowboys won the Super Bowl. Their window remains open heading into 2023 though, and the addition of Brandin Cooks gives Dallas one of the league’s best pass-catching units. Can Dak Prescott get it done finally? And can a talented defense continue to put things together after a second year in a row ranking in the top 10 in fewest points allowed?

Denver Broncos

8-9

The first year of the Russell Wilson era in Denver ended with a 5-12 record, marking the sixth season in a row that the team finished under .500. There should be some improvement in 2023, but concerns about Wilson remain after he led the offense to a league-worst finish in scoring in 2022. Combine that with a tough schedule and the first season for Sean Payton won’t end with the Broncos in the postseason, but improving by three wins would still be a good momentum builder going into 2024.

Watch the NFL with Fubo: Start your free trial now!

Detroit Lions

11-6

Everyone seems to think the Lions will be the breakout team of 2023 and we tend to agree. Jared Goff looked resurgent last season, leading the Lions to their first finish over .500 since 2017, and the return of Marvin Jones Jr. and the drafting of Iowa tight end Sam LaPorta gives him some extra weapons. The team also has one of the league’s most interesting running back situations, with David Montgomery and first-round pick Jahmyr Gibbs toting the rock.

Green Bay Packers

3-14

The Packers had an unbroken string of success during the switch from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers, but don’t expect the same thing with Jordan Love under center, and it’s not necessarily Love’s fault. The receiving corps is really young in Green Bay, and the team used its first-round pick on a linebacker instead of adding weapons for Love. Even with Rodgers, this offense ranked just 17th in passing yards last year. The defense was middle of the pack and likely won’t improve too much, especially because the change at QB likely means fewer sustained offensive drives, putting the defense in a more vulnerable position.

Houston Texans

4-13

After drafting quarterback CJ Stroud and trading up for defender Will Anderson, the Texans finally have some direction, something that’s been missing over the past two seasons. And the front office has brought in some talented veterans to fill the gaps in the roster. But the Texans still have a long way to go before they’re playoff contenders, so expect 2023 to be a rough year for the franchise.

Indianapolis Colts

6-11

The Colts drafted Anthony Richardson in the first round, but they’ll likely start Gardner Minshew for much of the season. There are talented players up and down this roster, and Minshew’s a solid passer, even if he’s not going to lead a team to the postseason. The Colts have a chance to contend for second place in the AFC South this season.

Jacksonville Jaguars

11-6

The Jaguars are the clear AFC South favorites. Trevor Lawrence took a big step forward last season and looks like he’s heading for a breakout season, and the addition of Calvin Ridley gives the Jags a strong receiving unit. If the defense—which gave up the ninth-most yards in the NFL last year—can improve just a little, the Jaguars will give double-digit games in 2023.

Kansas City Chiefs

14-3

The defending Super Bowl champions remain one of the favorites heading into 2023. While the wide receiver situation remains unsettled, the presence of quarterback Patrick Mahomes ensures that the team will be able to win games no matter who the pass catchers are, especially since tight end Travis Kelce is still the league’s best player at the position. On defense, the team has talent and added defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah in the first round.

Las Vegas Raiders

4-13

The Raiders went 6-11 last season with Derek Carr and Jarrett Stidham under center. They acquired Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, but we don’t see that turning this team around. Denver should be better this season, putting the Raiders in a hole as they’ll be the fourth-best team in their division. There are some talented pieces like 2023 first-round pick Tyree Wilson, but overall this Raiders roster just isn’t built to contend, and Garoppolo is a QB who needs a better roster than this to win.

Los Angeles Chargers

11-6

The Chargers are poised to have their best season of the Justin Herbert era in 2023. The addition of TCU receiver Quentin Johnston in the first round makes this one of the league’s most terrifying offenses on paper, and the defense should take a step forward after signing linebacker Eric Kendricks and drafting Tuli Tuipulotu and Daiyan Henley.

Los Angeles Rams

8-9

The Rams won the Super Bowl in 2021, but plummeted to 5-12 last season, with Matthew Stafford starting just nine games. The Rams should improve this season, but there are still a lot of question marks. Cooper Kupp’s an elite receiver, but there’s not a lot of proven talent behind him. Cam Akers is a good running back, but injuries have impacted his career. The defense struggled last season as well, ranking 19th in yards allowed and 21st in points allowed.

Miami Dolphins

7-10

Last year was a relatively successful one for the Dolphins, who went 9-8. But next year’s team didn’t do much to upgrade aside from adding backup quarterback Mike White, and the Dolphins face a lot of tough road games: Chargers, Eagles, Chiefs, Ravens. It makes sense to see some regression out of this team.

Minnesota Vikings

11-6

Last season was the best year of the Kirk Cousins era in Minnesota, as the Vikings won 13 games, their most since 2017. While we don’t expect a repeat of that in 2023, this team has the talent to win double-digit games in consecutive years for the first time since 2008 and 2009. Justin Jefferson should continue to make a strong case that he’s the NFL’s best wide receiver, but struggles on defense will likely continue to hurt the team. They allowed the second-most yards in the NFL last season.

New England Patriots

7-10

The Jets added Aaron Rodgers this offseason, which puts the Patriots in a position they aren’t used to: being the fourth-best team in the AFC East. While the addition of JuJu Smith-Schuster helps the offense, there are still too many questions about Mac Jones, and the Patriots looked destined to finish under .500 again this season. Jones just isn’t the kind of quarterback who can raise the floor of a roster like this.

New Orleans Saints

10-7

The Saints went 7-10 last year, with inconsistency at quarterback leading to the team finishing 22nd in scoring offense. That should change this year though, as the team acquired Derek Carr in the offseason. While Carr isn’t an elite quarterback, he’s still a major improvement over the duo of Andy Dalton and Jameis Winston that the Saints went with in 2022. Add in that the team has finished as a top-10 defense in both points and yards allowed for three straight seasons and you have a team that should be the clear favorites in the weakened NFC South.

New York Giants

8-9

The Giants went 9-7-1 last year, making the playoffs for the first time since 2016. But was Daniel Jones’ improvement real, or just a bit of a fluke? It’s hard to answer that until we see what he looks like this year, but it’s probably safest to bet on a little regression from the Giants, especially in a division with the Eagles and Cowboys in it. But who knows—this feels like one of the more volatile teams in terms of 2023 outcomes, and adding corner Deonte Banks in the first round might fix some issues that the G-Men have on defense.

New York Jets

13-4

The Jets went 7-10 last year, but the defense played pretty well. It was just that the team had a major question mark at the most important position: quarterback. The addition of Aaron Rodgers helps solve that, and the team also brought in Allen Lazard to give Rodgers a familiar weapon. If Breece Hall is healthy, this can be one of the NFL’s top offenses.

Philadelphia Eagles

13-4

The defending NFC champions should make another run at the Super Bowl in 2023 behind the stellar play of quarterback Jalen Hurts. The Eagles finished last year third in points and yardage offensively and were also a top-10 defense in points and yards allowed. They also had a really good draft, adding Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, Sidney Brown and Kelee Ringo to the defense to help improve a unit that was already very good in 2022.

Pittsburgh Steelers

5-12

Could this be the year that things fall apart for the Steelers? It’ll depend on the play of quarterback Kenny Pickett, who threw just seven touchdowns in 13 games as a rookie. The Steelers finished with the seventh-fewest points in the NFL and their expected record based on points for and allowed was closer to 7-10. We’re expecting Pickett to continue to struggle in his second NFL campaign.

San Francisco 49ers

14-3

The 49ers won 13 games last season despite a seventh-round rookie making five starts at quarterback. It’s not clear who will start at the position in 2023, but it might not really matter, because that player will be surrounded by offensive talent, like wide receiver Deebo Samuel and running back Christian McCaffrey. On defense, the Niners made a big move by signing defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, adding him to a defense that allowed the fewest points and yards in the NFL last year.

Seattle Seahawks

12-5

A resurgent Geno Smith helped make the transition away from Russell Wilson smooth last season, which earned Smith a contract extension. The Seahawks also added some good defensive talent in free agency, bringing in Dre’Mont Jones, Jarran Reed, Devin Bush, Julian Love and Bobby Wagner, and drafting wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba gives Seattle a fearsome receiving trio with him, DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

4-13

With Tom Brady gone, the Buccaneers will start either Baker Mayfield or Kyle Trask at quarterback. Whichever they go with, he won’t be able to smooth over the issues the team has nearly as well as Tom Brady did. Sure, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are a dangerous receiving duo, but there are just too many holes elsewhere on this roster to think the Bucs can compete this season.

Tennessee Titans

5-12

The big question for Tennessee? How long will Ryan Tannehill be under center before the team moves onto Will Levis. With a fairly poor receiving unit and rumors that the team moves on from Derrick Henry at some point this summer, 2023 projects to be a pretty rough year for the Titans. It doesn’t help that the defense allowed the 10th-most yards last season.

Washington Commanders

3-14

The Commanders are poised to turn to 2022 fifth-round pick Sam Howell at quarterback this season. Howell’s an intriguing prospect, but there are bound to be growing pains for the Commanders, especially in a tough NFC East. The team did add some talent in the defensive backfield in the draft though, but defense was already the team’s strong suit last season, and not adding skill position players gives this team one of the lowest offensive floors in the league.

Roberto Firmino leaves Liverpool as greatest success story of Klopp era

There was always likely to be one final Roberto Firmino moment in front of the Anfield supporters, who have idolised him for the last eight years. And so there was, as the Brazilian scored a late equaliser against Aston Villa to just about keep Liverpool’s chances of finishing in the top four alive.

While the 1-1 draw ultimately left Liverpool’s Champions League qualification hopes hanging by a thread, Firmino was still given a rapturous send-off. Fans sang his name as tears rolled down the Brazilian’s cheeks. Nobody could ever doubt the strength of the connection that grew between him and the Liverpool support.

Bobby – as he’s so affectionately called by Reds fans – displayed similar panache in Liverpool’s final match of the season, where he danced away from Southampton defenders to put away the second goal. It was the type of liveliness, skill, and joy that even fans outside of the club have come to adore.

But by that time Champions League qualification was already out of reach, with Newcastle and Manchester United locking up top-four earlier in the week. It was merely a final happy memory for the Brazilian at the end of a long run that was, at it’s peak, everything fans hold dear about football.

Liverpool have already taken measures to replace the 31-year-old, who found his game time somewhat restricted this season. Darwin Nunez was signed last summer, with Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz also giving Jurgen Klopp a number of different options in attack. The Reds have started the transition into a new era.

Sunday, however, signified the end of a cycle for Liverpool. Firmino was Klopp’s greatest individual success story and the player who came to embody the Reds under the German’s stewardship. Anyone who looked closely at the Brazilian got a good sense of what Liverpool at the peak of their powers stood for.

Klopp moulded Firmino, signed from Hoffenheim for just £29m in 2015, into the perfect centre forward for his system. Deployed in the number nine position, the Brazilian’s ability to drop deep and conduct attacks was key to the way Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah found so much space in front of goal.

Without Firmino, Liverpool’s attack would have looked very different. Mane and Salah might not have enjoyed so much success as goal-scorers. Even playing primarily as a facilitator, Firmino still managed to score 110 goals in 361 appearances in all competitions for the Anfield outfit, contributing more than his fair share to the attacking tally.

At their best, Liverpool excelled at finding undervalued players and moulding them to suit Klopp’s high-energy approach. The evolution of Firmino epitomised this. He arrived at Anfield as a very different player to the one who now departs. He was the ultimate Klopp soccer player.

“You are so football smart, in training sessions you are the first to get the exercise,” said Klopp when describing what made Firmino so special. “It’s like you saw it once: “Ah, okay, go for it”. It’s really special and it makes you the player you are, with all the technical stuff, but your football brain is incredible. That’s all good and makes you the player you are.”

Firmino was good enough to play for any of Europe’s elite teams. It would have been easy to envisage him leading the line for a Pep Guardiola side or a Barcelona team. Real Madrid reportedly made an offer to the Brazilian more than once, but Firmino decided to stay put. At Liverpool, he had everything he needed.

Now entering the twilight of his career, Firmino might not have the breadth of options he would have had a few years ago, but there is still widespread interest in the 31-year-old. Atletico Madrid and various clubs in Major League Soccer are reportedly interested, and Firmino still has plenty more to offer.

But his career will be synonymous with a golden period in Liverpool’s history. The Anfield club won it all under Klopp and are the only team to have got the better of Manchester City in a Premier League title race over the last six seasons. Firmino was arguably part of Liverpool’s strongest ever team, which is quite the feat given the history of the Merseyside club.

Klopp is rebuilding his squad with several new signings expected to arrive this summer, but he will struggle to construct another team that reflects his own identity quite like his first great Liverpool team did. It’s clear Klopp must evolve his own managerial style to push the Reds back to the top and Firmino was a player who Liverpool needed to move on.

Diaz, Jota and Nunez are all very different attackers to Firmino, but that might turn out to be a good thing for Liverpool. Klopp has experimented with a number of different shapes and approaches with the German more willing to using a more orthodox formula in the attacking third of the pitch. Perhaps that’s because he knows there’s no replicating a Roberto Firmino.
