Japan is looking to build on a very positive start in the 2025 SheBelieves Cup when it faces off against a Colombia side still seeking its maiden victory in the competition. Las Chicas Superpoderosas (The Powerpuff Girls) are featuring in the SheBelieves Cup for the first time this year and are looking to make their mark on the competition by sealing at least one win in the States. Sunday’s matchup will be the first time Colombia and Japan’s women’s teams have faced off, with the former hoping to put an end to a six-match winless run that dats back to last year’s Olympic Games.

Colombia was roundly praised for reaching its maiden Women’s World Cup in 2023, which marked the nation’s true arrival at the elite level in women’s soccer.

But Angelo Marsiglia’s side are finding out their level all over again this week and will face off against another world-class threat in Japan, who has lost just one of its last nine in regulation time.

The United States got its tournament up and running with a 2-0 victory over Colombia, though the South Americans gave a valiant account of themselves after limiting the hosts to just one goal per half:

By contrast, Japan managed to keep the Stars and Stripes to a goalless scoreline when they met in the quarter-finals of Paris 2024 last year.

It was only after 105 minutes that the Japanese defense finally relented and allowed Trinity Rodman to score the eventual decider.

Nils Nielsen’s side have sealed back-to-back 4-0 wins in each of their two outings since then, beating South Korea in an October friendly before battering Australia in its curtain-raiser on Thursday.
