Japan and Australia will kick off the 2025 SheBelieves Cup in Houston on Thursday. Watch the game live and for free on Fubo today.

Australia will make its debut in the SheBelieves Cup on Thursday when it faces off against tournament regular Japan at the Shell Energy Stadium in Houston. Both the Matildas and Colombia will be taking part in the competition for the first time, and interim head coach Tom Sermanni will have the privilege of attempting to lift the team from Down Under to a surprise win in their opener. Australia has won just one of its last four clashes against Japan – a 2-0 victory at the Tournament of Nations in 2018 – but will hope a squad infused with top talent can improve those returns.

Despite its link as a fellow English-speaking country, Australia’s squad actually has fewer players than Japan currently based in the Women’s Super League.

That being said, the proportion of stars playing for England’s elite is perhaps tilted in favor of the Australians, with talismanic talents like Caitlin Foord, Kyra Cooney-Cross (both Arsenal) and Manchester City’s Mary Fowler top of the pile.

Nils Nielsen has a number of Manchester-based assets in the Japan squad, meanwhile, such as City duo Yui Hasegawa and Aoba Fujino, as well as Man United midfielder Hinata Miyazawa.

Japan was mere minutes from reaching the semi-finals of the 2024 Paris Olympics before Trinity Rodman’s decider in the 105th minute sent Japan out of the competition:

Perhaps the brightest talent to watch out for in the squad is Chelsea youngster Maika Hamano, who is hoping to fulfil her promise as one of the biggest gems in Japan right now.

The 20-year-old is already two years into her tenure as a senior player for Japan and is hoping to add to her return of four goals in 16 caps.

Australia, meanwhile, will be relying on Foord to make the difference in attack given all-time top scorer Sam Kerr is currently missing through injury.

Regional restrictions may apply.
