It has been almost impossible for any team to build any sort of momentum in the Premier League this season. Arsenal are setting the pace at the top of the table and might well be on course for their first title since the days of Arsene Wenger, but Saturday highlighted the standard throughout the English top flight right now.

Indeed, the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa extended the Gunners’ winless run away from home to three games. On top of losing at Villa Park, Mikel Arteta’s team also drew away to Chelsea and Sunderland, raising some doubts over Arsenal’s title credentials. This has been a sticky patch in their campaign.

This run of form would be more concerning if it wasn’t for the fact that so many teams around Arsenal are also struggling to string together consistent results. Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Sunderland moved them to within two points of top spot, but it was only two weeks ago that Pep Guardiola’s side suffered a bruising defeat at Newcastle United.

It was around this time that Chelsea were widely being spoken about as potential title challengers. The Blues had impressed in their 1-1 draw against Arsenal, holding their own against the table-toppers despite being down to 10 men for the majority of the match. They appeared to be on an upward trajectory.

Now, though, Chelsea are eight points adrift of Arsenal after disappointing results against Leeds United and Bournemouth, slipping to fifth in the table. A few more negative results and Enzo Maresca might start to come under pressure. That’s how quickly the situation can change.

After only a few games of the 2025/26 season, Ruben Amorim appeared to be fighting for his job. Now, Manchester United are firmly in contention for a top five place having lost just one of their last nine league games. At long last, the Old Trafford outfit seems to be heading in the right direction, although their development still isn’t exactly linear.

There is quality throughout the Premier League. That has been the case for a long time, but it feels particularly true now. Look at how Leeds, a promoted team, have taken points off Chelsea and Liverpool in their last two games. They would have taken something from Manchester City too had it not been for a late Phil Foden decider. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, sit in the top four after a suffering a mere three losses to start the season. The south London outfit is building on last season, when they lifted the FA Cup for the first time in their history.

Sunderland have also been extremely competitive as a promoted side up from the Championship. The Black Cats spent the best part of $200m on transfers in the summer and have hit the ground running this season, currently sitting in the top half of the table. They have taken points against Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Even at the wrong end of the table, teams are scrapping for survival. Nottingham Forest have improved since swapping Ange Postecoglou for Sean Dyche while West Ham are showing some signs of life under Nuno Espirito Santo, losing just one of their last four league games.

True parity might never be achieved in the Premier League, but its competitiveness across all 20 teams is the envy of the other Big Five leagues. English soccer’s financial might has made this possible with clubs like Bournemouth and Brighton able to compete for some of the best talent on the continent.

Arsenal will probably win the title. They look to be the strongest team, but there will be more moments like the one they endured at Villa Park on Saturday. Everybody is capable of giving everyone else a bloody nose on their day. It’s just about who can get to the end of the season having sustained the fewest punches.
