Which signings do the Premier League elite need to make before the summer transfer window closes?

Over €2 billion has been spent by Premier League clubs this summer and much more will be splurged before the transfer window closes.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have all been busy, to varying degrees, but none of the Premier League’s traditional ‘Big Six’ have a complete squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Here’s what each member of the ‘Big Six’ needs before the summer transfer window closes.

Arsenal

The Premier League champions might have failed in their efforts to sign Vinicius Junior, but a new left winger is still required to upgrade Mikel Arteta’s forward line. Greek international Christos Tzolis has arrived from Club Brugge and has made a good start as an Arsenal player during pre-season.

Nico Williams and Kenan Yildiz have both been linked with a move to North London. The addition of a new elite-level winger on the left side would give Arsenal better balance in the final third of the pitch and would ease some of the creative burden on Bukayo Saka on the opposite wing.

Chelsea

Chelsea have been extremely active this summer. Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Valentin Barco, Pep Chavarria, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck have all arrived at Stamford Bridge with Xabi Alonso hired to reshape the Stamford Bridge side in his own image.

Such is the depth in Chelsea’s squad, it’s difficult to pinpoint one clear need over any others. However, doubts continue to linger over the quality of Robert Sanchez as the Blues’ first-choice goalkeeper. Could Chelsea enter the market to find an upgrade on the Spaniard?

Liverpool

Andoni Iraola is reshaping Liverpool in his own image, although the new Reds manager hasn’t been given the players many expected he would be afforded upon taking over at Anfield. In particular, Liverpool require a new winger to replace Mohamed Salah who left at the end of last season.

Yan Diomande was believed to be the club’s first choice before the Ivorian joined Real Madrid instead. Bradley Barcola has also been linked with a move to Anfield, but the French international would likely cost a Premier League-record transfer fee. Salah still hasn’t been replaced with the start of the season just around the corner.

Manchester City

Manchester City are facing their biggest reset of the Abu Dhabi era with Pep Guardiola gone and Enzo Maresca in as his replacement. Rodri could also be on his way out of the Etihad Stadium which could hasten City’s need to strengthen their midfield unit ahead of the new season. 

Ayyoub Bouaddi is reportedly edging closer to joining Manchester City from Lille after catching the eye for Morocco at the World Cup. Enzo Fernandez also has a fan in the shape of Maresca who would apparently like to be reunited with the Argentinean international at his new club after coaching him during their time together at Chelsea.

Manchester United

Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have joined Manchester United ahead of the new season, but Michael Carrick could still do with a third new midfielder to bulk up his squad in the centre of the pitch. However, United could do with addressing the left wide of their team as a greater priority.

Lewis Hall is reportedly of interest to United although Newcastle United might not wish to sanction the sale of yet another key player. Carrick could also push for the capture of a new left winger although Marcus Rashford has returned from a season on loan at Barcelona and is being reintegrated.

Tottenham Hotspur

Roberto De Zerbi earned the right to remould Tottenham Hotspur by saving them from relegation last season and the Italian has wasted no time in bringing in some of his players. However, Spurs are still lacking a top-level number nine to lead the line heading into the 2026/27 campaign.

Folarin Balogun is believed to be a target with recent reports claiming talks had started with Monaco over a potential €60m transfer for the USA international. Balogun would be a good fit for De Zerbi’s style of play and would give the American forward a platform to demonstrate his quality.
