It was only three years ago that Malmo managed to do the double over Rangers in Champions League qualifying, though it turned out to be a blessing in disguise of sorts.
That’s after the Glaswegian giant went on to reach the final of that season’s Europa League, where it ended up finishing as runner-up to Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville.
That being said, Malmo will be no less confident of keeping up its prolific run of form against this opponent and getting off the mark quickly in its bid to claim continental silverware.
The Blue Ones are currently 11 points clear at the top of Sweden’s Allsvenskan with a little more than one month of the season remaining, though their form has started to dip of late.
Henrik Rydstrom’s side has, kept four consecutive clean sheets but has won only two of its last seven outings, including back-to-back defeats to Sparta Prague in the Champions League playoffs.
Rangers has been more dominant domestically and won five of its last games on Scottish soil, although an Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic has left it five points off the pace in the league.
Still, the Europa League will give Philippe Clement’s side a happy distraction, as it looks to return to its former Europa League heights with a manager well-versed in this competition.
