How Barcelona came back from the brink thanks to its famous youth academy

FC Barcelona is a talent factory like no other in world soccer. For a few years, though, the Catalan club forgot this fact, spending itself into a hole that very nearly engulfed the entire institution. Barca is still recovering from the financial crisis that called into question the future of one of Europe’s most storied clubs.

It was within this financial crisis, however, that Barcelona rediscovered its identity. Unable to spend big on ready-made superstars, the club turned to its famed youth academy again. The same youth academy that brought through the likes of Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique. A new generation of homegrown performers soon emerged.

Lamine Yamal has been a first team figure for the last three seasons. Widely seen as the natural heir to Messi in blaugrana, the teenager is Barcelona’s most dependent creative spark in the final third. Without Yamal, Barca aren’t the same team. This was clear at various points of last season when he was unavailable through injury.

Gavi broke through before Yamal and is another La Masia-crafted youngster who oozes Barcelona. He is the physical embodiment of the club in terms of the principles and values that underpin the entire operation dating back to the days of Johan Cruyff and Pep Guardiola. The midfielder is technically and physically elite. Gavi offers so much on both sides of the ball.

Pedri didn’t come through La Masia, joining Barcelona from Las Palmas when he was still a teenager, but he is another young player who reflects everything the Catalans stand for as a club. While injuries have been an issue for Pedri in recent seasons, there is no better playmaker in Europe when he is on his game.

Pau Cubarsi also deserves a mention. The youngster’s emergence has allowed Hansi Flick to play a high defensive line with Cubarsi among the best at reading the game in front of him. Indeed, the 19-year-old won the best young player award at the 2026 World Cup after anchoring Spain’s backline to the trophy.

Then there’s Fermin Lopez, Marc Bernal, Marc Casado, Alejandro Balde, Xavi Espart, Gerard Martin and Dani Olmo who returned to Camp Nou after leaving at a young age. It’s a cavalcade of young talent – indeed, Barcelona fielded four 19-year-olds in their 2-0 victory against Athletic Club last week – Yamal, Cubarsi, Bernal, and Espart.

Barcelona’s money troubles prevented the club from being its own worst enemy. Barca never really needed Antoine Griezmann. Or Philippe Coutinho. Or Ousmane Dembele. Or any of the other players Barca broke the bank to sign between the years of 2017 and 2020. These were transfers that took the Catalans away from the identity established over several decades.

That identity is there for all to see in the way Barca now plays. The ‘tiki-taka’ approach of the Guardiola era has been tailored for the modern game with Flick’s team much more direct than the great Barcelona team of 2008-2012 ever were. Nonetheless, the focus on possession is still Barca’s foundation as a side.

As things stand, Barcelona are the favourites to retain their La Liga title. Real Madrid have been busy in the summer transfer window with Jose Mourinho now in charge of the Santiago Bernabeu outfit. Los Blancos can’t be discounted as title contenders, especially after such a strong start to the season.

Rodri’s signing was a statement transfer by Barca with Anthony Gordon and Karim Ademyemi also joining. Most expected the Catalans to move for an elite-level centre forward after the exit of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, with Julian Alvarez the primary target target. Gabriel Jesus joined from Arsenal, but many expected someone more reliable.

Some of these signings are counter to the way Barcelona have built their squad in recent years, but La Masia’s imprint is all over Flick’s team. While the Catalans attempted to supplant Real Madrid as the Galacticos, they have found greater comfort in returning to their roots. The solution to Barca’s problems was under the club’s nose the entire time.
