Japan and the Netherlands hit the pitch on Wednesday in the second semifinal of the U-20 Women’s World Cup. Japan comes into the match fresh off a big 1-0 win over tournament favorite Spain. The Japanese team dominated much of the match as it had 10 shots on target compared to one for Spain. Despite those 10 shots on target, the team wasn’t able to get one through until the 102 minute when Hiromi Yoneda finally found the back of the net with the game-winner. The win kept the team undefeated in the tournament and was its second straight one-goal win. Japan knocked off Nigeria 2-1 in the first round of the knockout stage. Wednesday it will look to continue its run and knock off a Dutch team looking to make a shocking run to the finals.

The Netherlands barely slipped into the knockout stage of the tournament after going 1-1-1 in the group stage. The Dutch team beat Costa Rica 2-0, played Argentina to a 3-3 draw and then lost to Korea DPR 2-0 for four combined points. It is tied with Argentina, but thanks to a better goal differential it moved on.
The Netherlands has made the most of the opportunity, as it beat France 2-1 in the first round and then knocked off Colombia in the quarterfinals in penalties.
The Dutch needed a comeback to force extra time as they trailed the Colombians 2-1 late, but Inske Weiman scored in the 85th minute to tie the game.
Wednesday night the Netherlands now has another chance to pull off an upset and earn a trip to the World Cup Finals.
