Zambia will take on Japan in the last group stage match in Group D a part of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup at Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on Wednesday afternoon. Japan will head into this game needing a win or a draw to advance to the knockout portion of the tournament. With a 1-1-0 record and undefeated through two games, Japan has a total of four points tied with Poland and one point ahead of Brazil. Those two nations play each other at the same time this game is going on. Japan drew the first match of the team’s World Cup with Poland 0-0. It took on Brazil and won in the second game 2-1. After going down 1-0 in the 8th minute, it battled back right after the halftime break with two quick goals. Momo Saruang Ueki Sato scored the team’s first goal in the 49th minute followed by teammate Asako Furuta. Japan will now look to stay undefeated in the group stage.

Taking the field with Japan, Zambia is the only team in Group D who is already eliminated from knockout contention. This nation is still playing just to play spoiler to Japan and its hopes. However, even with a loss, Japan would still make it to the knockout stage as long as Brazil does beat or draw with Poland today.

Zambia lost the first game of the group stage play against Brazil 1-0 allowing an early goal to decide the game. It turned around and got rocked 2-0 by Poland in the next game. Zambia will now try to regroup and not leave the 2024 U17 Women’s World Cup with three straight losses in the group stage.
