Marcus Rashford was so unwanted by Manchester United that he was forced to train separate from the rest of the squad towards the end of his time. He, along with Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia, have been referred to as The Bomb Squad, with none of the five players part of Ruben Amorim’s plans for the future.

Rashford’s Old Trafford nightmare, however, has come to an end with the 27-year-old sealing a dream move to Barcelona. Having been frozen out of the picture at Manchester United, Rashford is now set to join the Spanish champions where he will be part of one of the strongest teams in Europe. He has fallen upwards.

This is the perfect outcome for Rashford, who initially wanted to join Barca in January before Aston Villa signed the wide forward on loan for the second half of the 2024/25 season. It’s widely known that Rashford has long pictured himself in the famous blaugrana colours of the Catalan club.

However, Rashford must recognise this as a career reckoning. In many ways, he doesn’t deserve an opportunity like this. Not only has his form at Manchester United been underwhelming for the last two seasons, questions have been openly asked about commitment levels and willingness to work hard for the benefit of the team as a whole.

Hansi Flick will demand these things and more from Rashford as a Barcelona player. The Catalans aren’t the most formidable attacking team in Spain purely because of their talent, but because of the intensity they play with. No other La liga side could match Barca’s energy last season and this was a key factor in them winning the title.

Talent was never Rashford’s issue at Old Trafford. Manchester United are desperate for attacking threat and so Amorim’s banishment of the 27-year-old was a statement on something else. Rashford must learn lessons from what went wrong for him at United to become a key figure for Barcelona.

Rashford must also recognise that he doesn’t just have a point to prove to Manchester United and his doubters in English soccer, but Barcelona – who wanted Nico Williams ahead of the Englishman. Rashford was Barca’s second choice until Williams performed a U-turn and decided to stay at Athletic Club instead of making the move to the Camp Nou.

There is even the suggestion that Barcelona would have preferred Luiz Diaz as a left-sided option. The Catalans enquired about the Colombian winger only to be put off by Liverpool’s asking price. Rashford isn’t just Barca’s second or third choice, but the budget choice. Barcelona didn’t even spend the money to sign him permanently.

Raphinha will likely start ahead of Rashford on the left side of Barcelona’s attack. There will be rotational opportunities for the 27-year-old as the Catalans fight on multiple fronts, but Raphinha will be ahead of the on-loan Manchester United forward in the pecking order. Rashford’s primary role might be as an impact sub.

Despite all of this, there’s the chance that a new environment and a new culture reinvigorates Rashford. There were glimpses of his best form in his short spell at Aston Villa last season and so there’s reason to believe Barcelona can get something out of Rashford that Amorim couldn’t at Manchester United.

Flick’s fast and furious style of play could be a good fit for Rashford who is most potent when he has open space to attack at speed. Raphinha was revived by Flick’s approach and the German coach could do something similar for Rashford who still, theoretically, has his peak years as a professional ahead of him.

Any change of scenario has the potential to be a good thing for Rashford. Manchester United is also thankful to move on from the episode concerning the 27-year-old’s future at the club. Barcelona, meanwhile, could be the biggest beneficiaries of the deal – if Rashford is willing to work on his own shortcomings.
