Rayo Vallecano’s hopes of qualifying for Europe are at risk of falling apart when it plays host to Sevilla on Saturday, hoping to avoid recording a third straight defeat following recent slips against Barcelona and Villarreal. The Red Sashes are still sixth in La Liga as things stand but sit just three points off 11th place, knowing the wrong turn in results could send their season into a downward spiral. Sevilla, on the other hand, is on an upward curve after losing just one of its last seven outings (also to league leader Barcelona) and is looking to mark a fourth straight away game without a loss.

Better late than never, Garcia Pimienta has succeeded in steering Sevilla around a corner after some dismal form saw the club idling in the race to avoid relegation.

The club’s road form in particular has enjoyed a boost of late after weathering a woeful run of away results in the winter, taking seven points from the last nine on offer away from home.

One week after conceding four at home to Barcelona, Sevilla netted four of its own in a one-sided victory on the road to Real Valladolid last weekend:

Spanish youngster Juanlu Sanchez netted two for Los Nervionenses, while Isaac Romero and Dodi Lukebakio contributed the other half of their goal count.

Pimienta’s side have since backed that up by clinching successive wins for the first time this league season, evidence that things are (very) slowly but steadily improving.

Rayo, meanwhile, recently suffered its first home defeat in a league fixture since Dec. 1, not long after bagging three straight home wins and hoping to restore that form some Saturday.
