Las Palmas’ relegation from La Liga could be confirmed unless it comes up with three points at Sevilla on Tuesday.

It’s crunch time in La Liga this week as Las Palmas travels to Spain’s mainland knowing any failure to beat Sevilla away from home on Tuesday could see its relegation from the top flight confirmed any day now. Los Amarillos are just three points from safety, but have only two games remaining to save their place among Spain’s elite, while 16th-place Sevilla appears to have done just about enough to guarantee another campaign in the league. These two teams shared the spoils in a four-goal thriller the last time they met in August, while Sevilla managed to win their previous seven straight encounters prior to that.

Las Palmas can’t drop any lower than 19th, but need to leapfrog Leganes to pull off its great escape, with the Cucumber Growers two points better off and hoping to replace Alaves directly above.

Sevilla had a glaring opportunity to safelock its La Liga future last time out but came up short at Celta Vigo despite playing half the game a man up.

Marcos Alonso’s dismissal on the stroke of half-time – when the game was level at one goal apiece – should have been the nail in the coffin for Celta, who instead scored twice after the break to edge a five-goal thriller.

Kike Salas’ late consolation was no more than that, and it means Sevilla has now gone eight without a win and lost its last four straight games on the road.

Former Sevilla reserves coach Diego Martinez comes back to his old club for the first time since taking over as Las Palmas’ boss and is in a desperate bid to guide his current club to safety.

Martinez previously spent seven years in Seville watching over different youth and reserve teams, even managing to get Sevilla B promoted to the Segunda Division in 2016.
