Villarreal is slipping further from La Liga’s upper crust as it hosts Espanyol on Monday

After inspiring with their form earlier this season, both Villarreal and Espanyol are struggling to get over La Liga’s finish line and have each shown wavering form of late ahead of their showdown on Monday. The two teams will face off at the Estadio de la Ceramica, where Villarreal is aiming to extend its run of dominance in this fixture, having last dropped a point against Espanyol back in 2021. Marcelino’s men aren’t in the brightest of moods after failing to win a league match in their last three attempts, though Espanyol’s current run is even worse after going without a win in five.

Another silver lining for Villarreal coming into this clash is its streak of six straight wins over Espanyol, most recently defeated Los Periquitos 2-0 in Barcelona back in November.

Gerard Moreno and Alberto Moleiro supplied the Yellow Submarine’s goals on that occasion, ensuring Villarreal has also kept back-to-back clean sheets in the last two clashes between these clubs:

Espanyol’s barren patch currently includes four losses from its last five games and slipping down to sixth in La Liga after only recently pushing for a top-four place.

Manolo Gonzalez is further hampered by the fact he won’t be able to call upon Carlos Romero or Ramon Terrats, each of whom are currently on loan from Villarreal and can’t face their parent club.

That’s in addition to Javi Puado, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign due to a knee injury.

For Villarreal, the major absences include defenders Juan Foyth and Willy Kambwala, as well as Logan Costa and Pau Cabanes, each of whom are injured.

Alfonso Pedraza is also suspended for the visit of Espanyol, which should see Sergi Cardona get the run at left-back, while Ayoze Perez is a big concern to be fit so he can lead the attack.
