In the first round of playoffs, Cruz Azul played Tijuana, losing the first leg 3-0 before bouncing back to win the second with an identical 3-0 score to advance to the semifinals. Club America took on Toluca in the quarterfinals, winning both legs with 2-0 victories to advance in the playoffs.

When the teams met on Thursday night for the first leg of apertura semifinals, they played to a scoreless draw despite both teams having multiple opportunities to break open the scoring. Cruz Azul dominated possession, holding onto the ball for 65 percent of the match and producing seven total shots with two being on frame. Club America only held the ball for 35 percent of the contest, but were able to produce six shots with two on frame, both of which were scooped up by Kevin Mier in net for Cruz Azul.
