Will Still will once again be reunited with former employer Reims on Friday when Lens hosts Reims in this weekend’s Ligue 1 opener, hoping to maintain an unbeaten start against his old club. The Belgian boss left Reims to take over at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis last summer and got the better of this fixture when first reacquainted in November, clinching a 2-0 win away from home. Le Sang et Or will be back on home soil for the second salvo on Friday and will look to extend an undefeated streak in this matchup that dates all the way back to January 2019.

It’s an even longer wait since Reims last defeated Lens on its own turf, back when the two teams were both in France’s second tier.

Much has changed for the clubs since then, and Lens in particular having climbed into Ligue 1 title contention in 2023. 

The club has won back-to-back home games for the first time since August, most recently defeating Saint-Etienne 1-0 at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis thanks to Goduine Koyalipou’s decider:

The same can’t be said for Les Rouges et Blancs, who occupy the relegation play-off spot at present and is just three points from falling into the automatic relegation places.

That means defeat this weekend could open the door to them slipping further, with Saint-Etienne directly below in 17th – albeit with a far inferior goal difference.

Lens, on the other hand, has far loftier aspirations considering it sits ninth but is only five points off the European qualification spots, and form has started coming together of late.

Still’s side are unbeaten in nine games against Reims and have won five of their last seven encounters, hoping to complete a home-and-away double for the season come Friday.
