Rennes will hope to clinch three consecutive wins for the first time this season when it travels to Lyon for a Ligue 1 showdown of mighty proportions on Saturday. Les Rouge et Noirs have booked back-to-back wins over Le Havre (1-5) and Nantes (2-1), but a weekend trip to the Groupama Stadium promises to be a different level of threat altogether, particularly with Lyon on a bit of a losing streak. Les Gones were recently knocked out of the Europa League following the most dramatic of exits against Manchester United, and they’re now looking to bounce back from a shock defeat to Saint-Etienne.

Lyon’s loss to Man United was heard around the world after Paulo Fonseca’s men led by two goals at Old Trafford in extra time, only to concede three times in seven minutes and bow out of Europe.

Fonseca was missing from the touchline for the more recent defeat to Les Verts, however, owing to the fact his nine-month ban for headbutting an official only applies in France.

Lyon’s top-four hopes were dealt an unexpected hammer blow after a shock 2-1 defeat at Saint-Etienne last weekend, where a win would have lifted Les Gones into the Champions League spots:

And that on top of the 5-4 extra-time defeat to United in the Europa League just three days prior will have undoubtedly dented the mood among Fonseca’s side.

Mid-table Rennes, meanwhile, is at a point in its season where there’s little left to fight four, sat 10th in the standings with no real prospect of progression with four games to go.

Things can get a lot worse if Habib Beye’s men grow complacent, however, and Lyon is certain to have its own motivation as Champions League qualification still lies within its grasp.

Regional restrictions may apply.
