Liverpool will temporarily move to the top of the Premier League with a win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, but a stutter on the south coast earlier this season should put the Reds on high alert. Even a draw would be enough for Jurgen Klopp’s men to move up to first considering they enter Week 29 sat level on points with joint-leader Arsenal, though dropping points at home would be a major disappointment for the Merseysiders. The Seagulls struck from behind to draw 2-2 when Liverpool visited the Amex Stadium in October, and they travel this weekend hoping to go unbeaten in four consecutive trips to Anfield.

The Kop may be one of the most intimidating sights in Premier League soccer, but Brighton has proved itself undaunted by the prospect in recent years, drawing in each of its last two visits.

That’s after Steven Alzate scored at Anfield in February 2021 to secure Brighton’s first win at the ground in just shy of four decades, sparking a surge in results for the south-coast club.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side are taking on Liverpool at an opportune moment, too, after the Merseysiders saw their nine-game unbeaten streak come to an end just before the international break.

Bitter rival Manchester United knocked Klopp & Co. Out of the FA Cup quarter-finals thanks to Amad Diallo’s 121st-minute strike, sealing the most dramatic of 4-3 victories:

And it just so happens Brighton has a slight spring in its step after recently winning back-to-back games for the first time since November.

It also plays in Brighton’s favor that Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson is back on the treatment table and won’t feature on Sunday.

That’s in addition to the already sidelined group including Diogo Jota, Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Thiago Alcantara, while Curtis Jones is also a doubt to be available.

Regional restrictions may apply.
