The U.S. has a score to settle against Panama on Saturday as the teams reunite following their Copa America game.

Mauricio Pochettino may not have been in charge of the United States men’s national team at the Copa America, but it will nonetheless be his burden to deliver redemption over Panama when they meet on Saturday. Los Canaleros played a big role in boosting their CONCACAF counterparts from the tournament in June after a 2-1 upset in Atlanta saw the Stars and Stripes ousted at the first hurdle. A change in management sees former Chelsea, PSG and Tottenham boss Pochettino take over with huge expectations, with plenty to play for at the Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, despite this being a friendly.

Fans may have to mute their expectations for just how much Pochettino can be expected to change having only taken charge of his first USMNT training camp starting Monday.

The Argentinian brings with him a major profile and is arguably the biggest coaching name to take charge of the national team, and certainly the biggest profile since Jurgen Klinsmann was in charge.

The US appeared to be en route to its second Copa America win after Folarin Balogun opened the scoring over Panama, only for goals from Cesar Blackman and Jose Fajardo to seal the comeback:

The Stars and Stripes certainly weren’t helped by Timothy Weah being sent off in the 18th minute, and it was more than an hour later that Panama levelled the playing field with Adalberto Carrasquilla’s dismissal.

The USMNT is now four games without a win and should have been bitterly disappointed to draw 1-1 with New Zealand last time out, again conceding in the dying minutes of that encounter.

Expect some experimentation from Pochettino in his USA debut, although the limited time he’s had with the squad may not lead to major deviation just yet.
