The Chicago Stars will host the visiting Washington Spirit on Saturday afternoon at SeatGeek Stadium as the teams look to move up in the NWSL standings. The Stars are currently at the bottom of the NWSL standings after getting off to a 1-1-5 start this season which prompted the firing of head coach Lorne Donaldson. While it is still too early to tell how the team will operate under interim head coach Masaki Hemmi, the team did play to a 0-0 draw against Gotham FC in his first match on Sunday. While Gotham outplayed Chicago, Alyssa Naeher stood strong in between the pipes, making five saves to earn her first shutout of the 2025 season. The team will look to keep that unbeaten streak alive on Saturday with a win against the Spirit.

The Spirit comes into Saturday’s road game with an overall record of 4-0-3 for a total of 12 points this season which has them sitting in sixth place in the league table. The team has lost two games in a row with the most recent being a close 4-3 defeat by Angel City last Friday. Esme Morgan finished the game with a brace, scoring in the 30th and 89th minutes, while Gift Monday scored the team’s other goal in the 40th minute. The game was tied up in the final minutes of the game, but Angel City snuck one by Alexandra Elena MacIver in stoppage to take the three points.

Washington and Chicago last met in October of the 2024 season and the game went in the Spirit’s favor with a 2-0 victory. Two red cards were awarded in the 70th and 72nd minutes, one to each team, so regulation play ended with the teams playing 10 per side.
