Early in the NWSL season, two of the top teams will face off with the Washington Spirit hosting the Kansas City Current at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. Both teams enter the match after winning their season opening matches to sit atop the standings along with the Orlando Pride. The Spirit opened their season against the Houston Dynamo, wining 2-1 last weekend. The team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals from Makenna Morris in the 16th minute followed by Ashely Hatch in the 33rd minute. Houston was able to cut the lead in half with a goal in the 75th minute, but that is where the scoring ended.

Kansas City opened their season with a 3-1 win over Portland last weekend to pick up an early three points in the league standings. Kansas City started the game in a fury, scoring all three goals in the first half. Forward Temwa Chawinga scored the first goal of the match just four minutes into the match before Michelle Cooper added another goal in the 24th minute to make it a 2-0 game. Shortly before halftime, Debinha scored Kansas City’s final goal to take a 3-0 lead into the locker room. Portland was able to put a goal on the scoreboard in the 49th minute, but the Current’s defense was able to keep Portland from finding the back of the net for the rest of the match.

Kansas City and Washington last met in September and the Current won handily in a 3-0 victory. Earlier in the season, the Spirit won the earlier season meeting 4-1.
