South England sides square off as Southampton makes the short trip to Bournemouth in search of season’s first win

Winless in its first five matches this season, Southampton FC makes the short 30.6-mile trek to Vitality Stadium to face AFC Bournemouth where The Saints have not lost since 2016. Southampton has three consecutive wins at Bournemouth across all competitions and have outscored its hosts 10-2 in that span. Bournemouth has been shutout in back-to-back Premier League matches after earning its lone win this season at Everton back in late August and have not scored three straight contests against Southampton and four consecutive home matches against The Saints dating back to 2018. A win today would pull Southampton, at least for now, out of the relegation zone and mark the clubs first Premier League win since January of 2023.

Bournemouth foward Antoine Semenyo leads the club with two goals on the season, the only player for The Cherries to net more than one goal so far. Semenyo, the 24-year-old born in England but of Ghana descent, signed with Bournemouth on a four and a half year deal in January of 2023 and scored a career-high eight goals for the club last season. Semenyo made his international debut for Ghana in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and was included on the countries 26-man roster for the 2022 World Cup.

Southampton has managed just two goals in its first five matches this season, ranking 20th in the Premier League. The Saints spent 11 seasons in the Premier League finishing as high as sixth in 2016, but were relegated after 2023 and fought its way back to the top flight of English football by beating Leeds United in the EFL Championship Final.
