Manchester City finds itself in a rare rut and looking to avoid a fifth straight defeat in all competitions when Tottenham Hotspur visits the Etihad Stadium on Saturday seeking improvements of its own. Pep Guardiola may have recently signed a new one-year contract extension to dispel any sense the Catalan is feeling the strain, but he is very much under pressure to turn the ship around. And it just so happens Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs boast one of the best records against City in modern times, managing to avoid defeat in three of the last four encounters between these two clubs.

Postecoglou is far from immune to pressure himself, however, and will be demanding a big response from his side after succumbing at home to Ipswich Town a fortnight ago.

Tottenham headed into the international break with morale at a minimum after handing the Tractor Boys their first Premier League win of the campaign, losing a third league game in five outings.

City, meanwhile, is currently in the midst of its worst losing streak since 2006, most recently succumbing to Brighton & Hove Albion, where Matt O’Riley scored the winner on his league debut:

It’s a blow for Spurs that Uruguay international Rodrigo Bentancur will be missing until around the New Year after copping a seven-game suspension for racist remarks about captain Son Heung-min.

Star defender Micky van de Ven and forward Richarlison are also out for Saturday’s trip, while Cristian Romero and Timo Werner are concerns.

Linchpin Rodri remains absent for City and can’t come back soon enough, meanwhile, with Guardiola’s side just not the same without their general in midfield.

Central defender Ruben Dias won’t face Tottenham, though Nathan Ake, Phil Foden, John Stones, Jeremy Doku, Jack Grealish and Manuel Akanji could feature if they pass late fitness tests.
