Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off takes Arsenal to St. James’ Park for the latest edition of the Gunners’ growing rivalry with a Newcastle team that’s given them some hassle in recent years. The Magpies have beaten Mikel Arteta’s side in two of their last three clashes in the northeast, including a 1-0 result when last they hosted the north Londoners almost exactly one year ago. England winger Anthony Gordon’s finish was all that stood between the two sides that day, but Eddie Howe & Co may not be quite as confident this time around after going without a win in five league games.

Neither team will be lacking in motivation given recent form, with Howe’s Newcastle languishing at 12th in the table following a fairly miserable run of results as far as the league is concerned.

Newcastle did manage to inject some life into its season in midweek, however, advancing to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after beating Chelsea 2-0 at home having lost to the Blues in a league contest just a few days prior.

Similarly, Arsenal got back to winning ways with a dominant 3-0 win away to Championship side Preston swiftly after dropping more Premier League points at home to Liverpool.

That result was all the more impressive given Arsenal’s current list of injuries and suspensions, with many predicting a Liverpool win as a foregone conclusion in north London.

Arteta is still without Martin Odegaard and Riccardo Calafiori, though William Saliba will be a welcome sight in defense after serving his suspension.

Usual defensive partner Gabriel may take his turn on the sidelines, however, after he came off injured in the draw against Liverpool.
