A rejuvenated Al-Ahli plays host to Al-Shabab in the Saudi Pro League on Friday hoping to extend its seven-game unbeaten streak.

After a staggered start to the season, Al-Ahli is once again closing in on a place in the top four of the Saudi Pro League and looking to go eight games unbeaten when it hosts Al-Shabab on Friday. Matthias Jaissle appears to have weathered the storm and is once again taking the Royals to bigger and better things after struggling for anything resembling consistency at the start of this campaign. Al-Shabab is still deep in its search for momentum, meanwhile and travels to King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah sat sixth in the standings, level on points with fifth-place Al-Ahli, after going three without a win.

Former Turkey and Galatasaray manager Fatih Terem had Al-Shabab in fine fettle earlier this season, but two draws and a defeat just prior to the winter break has seen the team fade.

On the other hand, Al-Ahli has won four in a row in the league and is looking to climb higher as its resurgence continues, having gone undefeated in three meetings with the White Lions.

Al-Ahli’s improved stretch of Saudi Pro League form continued with a 4-2 win over Al-Taawoun almost a month ago when both Roberto Firmino and Riyad Mahrez got on the score sheet.

Jaissle will be looking to those same stars to keep Al-Ahli on form as the league season resumes, with both Firmino in particular not the consistent source of goals many in Jeddah would have hoped for. 

The former Liverpool ace has produced six goals from 19 Pro appearances in all competitions this term, but he’s bagged only three in the Pro League.

Mahrez, meanwhile, has been a help across the board with seven goals and seven assists this season and is the team’s top scorer as things stand.
