Seattle has to overcome a 2-0 deficit at home to Tigres UANL on Wednesday if it’s to reach the CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-finals.

Seattle is teetering on the edge of a CONCACAF Champions Cup exit on Wednesday unless it can successfully overcome a two-goal deficit when its hosts Tigres in the quarter-finals of the competition. The Sounders came off second-best in last week’s visit to the Estadio Universitario de UANL, where a finish from Ozziel Herrera and and own-goal from Jackson Ragen sealed a confident home win. An all-Major League Soccer line-up is still on the cards for this year’s semi-finals, though Guido Pizarro’s men will feel they’re in the driving seat despite a tough return trip to Lumen Field, where they have never won in two attempts.

These teams first faced off during the 2012/13 edition of the CONCACAF Champions League, in which Seattle successfully knocked Tigres out en route to a semi-final finish.

And it just so happened that on that occasion, the Sounders lost the opening leg 1-0 before coming back to win the return fixture at home 3-1 and advance.

The fixture is perhaps best well-known for a meteoric strike courtesy of Djimi Traore, who was a member of the Liverpool squad that won arguably the most memorable UEFA Champions League final against AC Milan in 2005:

Seattle finds itself with an even more difficult task in overcoming a 2-0 deficit this time around, though Brian Schmetzer will hope to repeat some magic after he was an assistant coach during that turnaround in March 2013.

Whereas the MLS side hasn’t played since last week’s defeat in Mexico, Tigres has been active and actually clinched a second straight win on Saturday when it decimated Chivas Guadalajara 4-1.

Only time will tell whether that extra fixture will come to weigh heavy on the legs of Pizarro’s men, while Schmetzer’s hosts stand to benefit from an extra few nights of respite.
