The five best signings of the January transfer window

The January transfer window is now closed and clubs across European soccer are counting the cost of the business they conducted. 

Naturally, the most business took place in the Premier League, but there was also movement in La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga. Here are five of the best transfers that were conducted over the last month.

Kevin Danso (Tottenham Hotspur)

No Premier League club needed January reinforcements more than Tottenham Hotspur. Injuries to countless first team players have left Ange Postecoglou scraping the bottom of the barrel and so the addition of Kevin Danso will surely help Spurs make some sort of recovery in the second half of the season.

Danso is physically imposing and is good enough in possession to succeed in a Postecoglou team. What’s more, the Austrian has a good injury record, has proven himself at a high level for Lens and will be a good fit for a Tottenham team that wants to play on the front foot. Danso could be a shrewd pick-up for a fee of just €25m. 

Patrick Dorgu (Manchester United)

It was a quiet window for Manchester United with Patrick Dorgu their only new addition. However, the Danish international fills a problem position for the Red Devils. Indeed, Ruben Amorim will be able to call on his new signing as a left wing back after joining from Lecce in a deal worth a reported €35m.

Dorgu is still raw, but is extremely mobile and should give United another dimension down the left side. With Diogo Dalot more comfortable on the right and Luke Shaw still not fully fit after a long period out through injury, Dorgu could be an important figure at Old Trafford in the second half of the season.

Evan Ferguson (West Ham United)

West Ham needed a new centre forward and in Evan Ferguson they found one. It wasn’t so long ago that the Republic of Ireland international was being linked with some of the biggest clubs in the Premier League. Injuries, however, have stalled Ferguson’s development and knocked him down the pecking order at Brighton.

Niclas Fullkrug is sidelined through injury until the end of the season with Michail Antonio also out of action after a car crash. Ferguson will have the chance to earn a starting spot after joining on loan from Brighton and could give the Hammers the cutting edge they desperately lack in front of goal.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Paris Saint-Germain)

Paris Saint-Germain pulled off one of the biggest deals of the January window by signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli for a fee of €70m. The French giants are improving under Luis Enrique, but required a ready-made difference-maker in the final third. Kvaratskhelia will be that figure for them.

Kvaratskhelia was ready for the next move in his career. The Georgian is comfortable enough in possession to succeed in a Lucho team, but will also give PSG the dynamism they need in the attack. Kvaratskhelia will have to earn his place in a forward line that includes Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembele. PSG, however, now have options they were sorely lacking after the departure of Kylian Mbappe.

Omar Marmoush (Manchester City)

Manchester City started a squad rebuild in the January transfer window with Omar Marmoush their most notable new signing. The Egyptian joined the Premier League champions from Eintracht Frankfurt for €70m and has already made a good impression, starting two Premier League matches.

Marmoush’s signing gives Pep Guardiola another option in the attacking third. The Egyptian has shown early signs of a partnership with Erling Haaland, pointing to the pair being deployed as a front two. Marmoush’s energy and intensity has already made a difference to Manchester City as they enter a new era.
