The five biggest Premier League summer transfers so far

The summer transfer window is open and Premier League clubs have already spent close to $1 billion on new signings. Indeed, it’s been a busy period as teams prepare for the 2025/26 season. Here are five of the biggest deals to have been completed so far.

Florian Wirtz (Liverpool)

Liverpool broke the Premier League transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, which says a lot about how highly they rate the German international. Wirtz had his pick of the biggest and best clubs in Europe. Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid all wanted the 22-year-old, yet he decided Anfield was the best place for his development.

The signing of Wirtz hints at a more possession-heavy approach from Arne Slot next season. The Dutchman generally used Jurgen Klopp’s system to guide Liverpool to the title last term, but he might now feel emboldened to introduce some of his own ideas with Wirtz the Reds’ first true number 10 since the days of Philippe Coutinho. 

Rayan Cherki (Manchester City)

Manchester City were in the race for Wirtz until Liverpool priced them out of the market. Instead of dropping over $100m on one player, City decided to pursue a number of players at a cheaper price point with Rayan Cherki being one of them. 

The Frenchman notched 19 goal contributions for Lyon in Ligue 1 last season and is versatile enough to play in a number of different positions across the forward. Guardiola used Cherki as a ‘False Nine’ at the Club World Cup with the 21-year-old also comfortable on either wing and as a number 10. He has huge potential.

João Pedro (Chelsea)

By scoring three goals in two games, Joao Pedro all but paid back the $60m Chelsea paid to sign him from Brighton with his contributions at the Club World Cup. The Brazilian has slotted into Enzo Maresca’s team seamlessly and already looks to have given the Stamford Bridge outfit a different dimension in the final third.

While Chelsea made progress under Maresca last season, qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Conference League, they were guilty of being predictable in attack. Pedro should help address this. He is technically excellent with the ball, is intelligent with his movement and has already proven himself as a goal threat as a Chelsea player.

Mohamed Kudus (Tottenham)

It took Tottenham Hotspur longer than many of their Premier League rivals to make their first notable addition of the summer, but the signing of Mohamed Kudus from West Ham was worth the wait. The Ghanaian was never able to show his best form for the Hammers, but he has the potential to become a key figure for Spurs.

Thomas Frank could use Kudus in the same way he did Bryan Mbeumo for Brentford. The former Ajax winger is an exceptional dribbler and will give Tottenham something different on the right side. With Morgan Gibbs-White also on his way from Nottingham Forest, Spurs’ attack could look rather different next season.

Martin Zubimendi (Arsenal)

After months of speculation, Arsenal finally completed the signing of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad earlier this month. The Spain international has been signed to be the Gunners’ Rodri in the centre of the pitch with Zubimendi one of the best midfield anchors in the European game. It’s easy to see why Mikel Arteta wanted him so badly.

Zubimendi’s arrival will free up Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice to have even more freedom as attacking midfielders. With Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke both reportedly on their way to the Emirates Stadium this summer as well, Zubimendi could be the player who allows Arsenal to take the next step as an attacking outfit. It could lead them to the title.
