In a three-minute video, Trent Alexander-Arnold confirmed a story that had rumbled for the entire season, possibly longer. As had been rumoured for a long time, this season will be the 26-year-old’s last at Liverpool. He will leave the club at the end of his contract and is widely expected to join Real Madrid.

“This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life,” said Alexander-Arnold. “This club has been my whole life – my whole world – for 20 years. “From the academy right through until now, the support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever. I will forever be in debt to you all.”

Alexander-Arnold’s decision has sparked debate within the Liverpool fanbase. Some are grateful for what the homegrown player has achieved in a red jersey over the years. Others are unhappy that he ran down his contract, meaning Liverpool will receive nothing in the transfer market for one of their best players.

From Alexander-Arnold’s perspective, though, this is a move he believes will lift him to an even higher level. He has publicly spoken about winning the Ballon d’Or, highlighting the scale of his personal ambition. Joining Real Madrid will give Alexander-Arnold the platform to truly establish himself as one of the best in the world.

At the Santiago Bernabeu, Alexander-Arnold will face new challenges. It’s unclear which manager he will be playing for, with Carlo Ancelotti reportedly on his way out. Xabi Alonso is believed to be Real Madrid’s first choice to take over, but the former midfielder has rejected offers from big clubs before. Alonso will need convincing to take over.

Tactically, Alexander-Arnold will also be an awkward fit for Los Blancos. For the last decade, Real Madrid have relied on Dani Carvajal as a defensive safety net. His mobility down the right wing has been crucial to giving Real Madrid’s attackers the freedom they require higher up the pitch.

With Carvajal now into the twilight of his career, Alexander-Arnold has been lined up as his replacement. Alexander-Arnold, however, is a very different sort of right back. He is a creative force and has been criticised for his perceived lack of defensive nous. The Englishman has never been a defensive safety net.

Real Madrid are already struggling to find the right balance after last summer’s signing of Kylian Mbappe – also as a free agent, after he ran down his contract at his previous club. The Frenchman is one of the best forwards in the world, but he wants to play on the left side of the attack, which is where Vinicius Junior also does his best work.

Adding Alexander-Arnold to the squad will give Real Madrid another tactical problem to solve. Would Alonso push the England international into central midfield? Could Alexander-Arnold actually be the replacement for Toni Kroos, who Real Madrid have desperately missed following his retirement last year?

In his farewell video, Alexander-Arnold expressed his desire for a new challenge and he will certainly find that at Real Madrid. At Liverpool, fans had his back as someone who came through the academy system. Liverpool fans saw Alexander-Arnold as one of their own. Real Madrid fans, however, are the most demanding in world soccer.

By making this move, though, Alexander-Arnold is joining the biggest club in the world where he will challenge for titles and trophies season after season. He will also link up with one of his closest friends, Jude Bellingham, who has already demonstrated what can be achieved in all-white. He was, after all, a European champion after just one season.

Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave Liverpool might have tainted his reputation at Merseyside, but it could bolster his standing in the wider game. The best players in the world play for Real Madrid. It’s been that way for decades. The club bases its entire identity around that idea, and Alexander-Arnold will be a part of it.
