All Italy needs is a draw at home to France on Sunday in order to secure top spot in its UEFA Nations League group.

Italy and France are already sure to be the top two finishers in Group A2 of the UEFA Nations League, but there’s still everything to play for in terms of deciding who wraps up as pool winner. Italy boasts a three-point advantage as things stand and needs only a draw at the San Siro in order to cement first place, while nothing but a win will do for Italy – and even that might not be enough. That’s after the Azzurri sealed a conclusive win in the reverse fixture two months ago, hoping to beat Les Bleus twice in the same calendar year for the first time since 1938.

Luciano Spalletti’s side is eyeing a piece of history when it plays host to France looking to bank a priority place in the quarter-finals of the Nations League. Italy waltzed out of Paris as a 3-1 victor when these teams last met in September, where Federico Dimarco pulled his team level at one apiece with a volley fit for the occasion:

The Azzurri have gone undefeated since then and most recently bested Belgium on Thursday, with Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali scoring his first international goal to bag the winner.

France has also embarked upon an unbeaten streak since losing to the Italians, though a 0-0 draw at home to Israel in midweek wasn’t part of the plan.

Didier Deschamps may look to shake things up slightly following that disappointment in Paris, with William Saliba, Adrien Rabiot and Marcus Thuram among those eyeing starting roles.

Spalletti, meanwhile, is unlikely to ring many changes to his XI as he looks to end a hugely impressive Nations League campaign on a high note.
