A single point separates Orange County from Colorado Springs in the Western Conference of the USL Championship ahead of their showdown at the Championship Soccer Stadium on Saturday. The Switchbacks make the trip west to Irvine, California, in the hopes that they can end this weekend inside the play-off places, even if only temporarily given they’ve played a game more than most of their immediate rivals. Orange County will also have dreams of landing a place in the top eight, especially considering each of the 10 points it has earned to date this term have come about on home soil.

Danny Stone’s men may not have been much to write about on the road this season, but Orange County has collected some significant results when playing in front of a home crowd.

Sacramento Republic and Tulsa – each in the running for play-off contention so far this term – have each visited the Championship Soccer Stadium and lost in recent weeks.

However, Orange County was exposed at home to New Mexico United in its last outing and succumbed 3-0 against the early favorite to top the Western Conference.

Meanwhile, Matt Mahoney was well-placed at the back post to give Colorado Springs a narrow 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds last weekend, a landmark goal for the Buffalo-born defender:

That brought an end to the Switchbacks’ run of seven straight games without a win inside regulation time, not to mention the club’s second clean sheet in a row.

James Chambers’ side haven’t conceded a goal since going down 4-1 against Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls in the US Open Cup earlier in May, but Orange County will put that run to the test.
