A Western Conference matchup will take place on Saturday night as Phoenix hosts Monterey Bay in USL Championship action.
Monterey Bay FC will travel to Arizona on Saturday night for a USL Championship match against Phoenix Rising FC at Phoenix Rising Stadium. Phoenix is currently sitting in 10th place in the Western Conference standings with a record of 2-4-3 for a total of 10 points. An upset over Monterey Bay on Saturday would move the team up several spots in the standings. The club’s most recent game was played against New Mexico United and resulted in a 2-1 victory to hand New Mexico its second straight loss. Hope Avayevu scored in the 13th minute to give Phoenix an early lead and assisted Darius Johnson’s goal in the 62nd minute to add a bit of insurance. New Mexico got one back with six minutes remaining in regulation, but Phoenix held on for the win.

Monterey Bay FC is sitting comfortably in second place in the Western Conference standings with a record of 4-4-2 for a total of 16 points. A win on Saturday night could move the club into first place, depending on results from first-place San Antonio FC and third-place El Paso as both teams also have 16 points. Most recently, Monterey Bay played Eastern Conference foe Rhode Island and the game resulted in a 1-1 draw. Mobi Fehr played a ball into Mayele Malango in the 17th minute which he finished to open the scoring. In the 77th minute, Rhode Island put in the equalizer. Despite plenty of opportunities to score the go-ahead goal, Monterey Bay had to settle for a draw after not being able to finish.
Monterey Bay and Phoenix Rising have already met once this season and the game resulted in a 3-1 win for Monterey Bay. Anton Sojberg, Adrian Rebollar and Carlos Guzmán scored for Monterey while Remi Cabral scored Phoenix’s lone goal.
