The famous Champions League anthem will ring loudly in the ears of 16 teams this week with every side still in the competition dreaming of becoming European champions.

Every tie has the potential for drama with several heavyweight clashes set to sort the wheat from the chaff. The Champions League will get serious from this point on. Here are the 16 teams left ranked on their quality and chances of winning the whole thing.

1 – Arsenal

Having finished top of the league phase with a perfect record of eight wins from eight games, Arsenal currently appear to be the strongest team in Europe. Mikel Arteta’s team have conceded just four goals in this season’s Champions League and are a big threat from set pieces. The only thing that could stop the Gunners is the demands of fighting on four fronts for silverware.

2 – Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have been in frightening form this season. The Bavarians boast the most fearsome frontline in European soccer with Harry Kane, Luis Diaz, Michael Olise and Jamal Musiala all capable of producing a moment of brilliance to decide a match. Bayern have shown signs of weariness recently, but continental glory is well within their sights.

3 – Barcelona

On their entertainment value alone, Barcelona might be the best team in Europe right now. Lamine Yamal continues to improve while the likes of Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, Marcus Rashford and Pedri have a record of producing when it matters most. Hansi Flick’s high defensive line, however, sometimes makes the Catalans vulnerable at the back. That cost them last season.

4 – Manchester City

Manchester City might be in the midst of a generational transition, rebuilding their squad over the last three transfer windows, but Pep Guardiola’s team are still capable of imposing their game on the strongest of opponents. City’s chances of winning the Champions League could hinge on Erling Haaland’s fitness with the Norwegian striker currently sidelined through injury.

5 – Paris Saint-Germain

Last season, Paris Saint-Germain blew away the opposition to win the Champions League for the first time in their history. This season, though, Luis Enrique’s side have struggled to reach the same heights. PSG are playing with less intensity and have missed Ousmane Dembele and Joao Neves, both of whom have missed matches through injury.

6 – Liverpool

As an attacking force, Liverpool are up there as one of the most potent teams in Europe. Hugo Ekitike is enjoying a successful maiden season on Merseyside with Florian Wirtz also improving after a big-money move from the Bundesliga last summer. At the back, though, Arne Slot has failed to find the right balance. Liverpool might lack the defensive structure to win another Champions League crown.

7 – Real Madrid

It’s been a chaotic season for Real Madrid so far. Xabi Alonso was replaced by Alvaro Arbeloa following a dressing room revolt. Recent defeats to Osasuna and Getafe paint the picture of a dysfunctional team. However, Real Madrid still boast some of the best players in the world and can’t be written off as a threat to win the Champions League yet again.

8 – Chelsea

The Club World Cup winners were expected to take another step forward in their development this season. Chelsea, however, have struggled for consistent form even after replacing Enzo Maresca with Liam Rosenior. Nonetheless, the Blues have shown their threat in a knockout format before and can’t be fully discounted as Champions League contenders.

9 – Atletico Madrid

Not so long ago, Diego Simeone was facing questions over his future as Atletico Madrid manager. Now, the Spanish side are in their best attacking form of the season, scoring 15 goals in their last six games in all competitions. Alexander Sorloth is in exceptional form while Ademola Lookman has settled quickly after joining in January. Atleti are a threat.

10 – Newcastle United

Newcastle United have struggled for consistent domestic form this season, sitting 12th in the Premier League table. In Europe, though, Eddie Howe’s team have fared better, narrowly missing out on an automatic place in the last 16. At their best, Newcastle are still a physical force that can out-run and out-fight any opponent on their day.

11 – Galatasaray

Galatasaray pulled off one of the biggest upsets of this season’s Champions League by knocking out Juventus in the playoff round. Their 5-2 win over the Italian giants in the first leg was especially eye-catching, highlighting the attacking threat of a team that boasts Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian is up there as one of the best centre forwards in the competition.

12 – Tottenham Hotspur

The 2025/26 season has been disastrous for Tottenham Hotspur in terms of their Premier League form with Igor Tudor’s team fighting to avoid relegation. In the Champions League, though, Spurs have been able to play a quick transition game that could see the North London outfit make an even deeper run in the competition.

13 – Bodo/Glimt

By beating Inter Milan home and away in the playoff round, Bodo/Glimt produced one of the biggest upsets of the Champions League era. On top of this, the Norwegians have also beaten Atletico Madrid and Manchester City in the competition and have shown their ability in a knockout format by making the semi-finals of the Europa League last season.

14 – Bayer Leverkusen

This Bayer Leverkusen team is a shadow of the one that sensationally beat Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title two seasons ago. Nonetheless, Kasper Hjulmand has pointed Leverkusen in the right direction after the short-lived tenure of Erik ten Hag, with USMNT international Malik Tillman growing in stature for his new team.

15 – Sporting CP

Sporting CP are one of the best around at regenerating after losing their best players. Last summer, the Portuguese side sold Viktor Gyokeres. A few months before that, they lost Ruben Amorim to Manchester United. And yet Sporting continue to prove their worth at the top level of the European game.

16 – Atalanta

Atalanta’s comeback win over Borussia Dortmund in the last round was one of the most exhilarating moments of this season’s Champions League. The Serie A outfit can’t be underestimated against Bayern Munich in the last 16. However, they might lack the top-end talent to go any further.
