The first Grand Slam of 2025 gets started with the first round of the Australian Open. Both defending champions are in action here in the first round to start their journey back to immortality down under. Aryna Sabalenka has won back-to-back Australian Opens and three Grand Slams overall. She has the opportunity to become the first threepeat Australian Open Champion in over 25 years. She starts that journey against Sloane Stephens in the first round. Jannik Sinner starts his championship defense against Nicolas Jarry. Last year Sinner won his first Grand Slam here in the Australian Open where he defeated 10 time champion Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic had won four straight Australian Opens that he was eligible to participate in before Sinner knocked him off in the semifinals. Last year was the first since 2010 where Djokovic participated in every Grand Slam event, but did not win a major.

Also in action in the men’s singles draw here in the first round are second-seeded Alexander Zverev, 10th seeded Grigor Dimitrov and 11th seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas who are all seeking their first Grand Slam title. Zverev and Tsitsipas have both played in multiple Grand Slam Finals, but fell short in etching their names into tennis immortality.

In the women’s singles draw second-seeded Iga Swiatek, third-seeded Coco Gauff and seventh-seeded Jessica Pegula in the first Grand Slam of the year. Swiatek has won a Grand Slam title in three straight years and has not made it past the semifinals here in the Australian Open.
