Scottie Scheffler, the only player to win back-to-back Players Championship titles, is back looking for No. 3 in a row at TPC at Sawgrass.

Scottie Scheffler became the only player to win the Players Championship in consecutive years with a one-stroke win last year and is back looking for a third straight win at the event dubbed golf’s fifth major at TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Scheffler’s putter failed him last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational as he lost nearly six strokes to the field while finishing seven shots back of winner Russell Henley. Scheffler, the reigning PGA Player of the Year, leads the field into the first round on Thursday.

Rory McIlroy changed clubs after winning the Pebble Beach Pro-Am last month but returned the three TaylorMade Qi10 woods to his bag for the final round at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last week. Meanwhile, the course at TPC Sawgrass has been renovated, with the most noticeable change being the return of the overhanging oak tree in front of the tee box on the sixth hole.

Xander Schauffele’s short game will be in focus this week after he finished below 50% in scrambling last weekend at Bay Hill. It was Schauffele’s first start in six weeks and the rust was evident. Collin Morikawa arrives at Sawgrass off another near-miss, when he failed to close out a win and was chased down by Henley.

The Players Championship features the largest purse in golf at $25 million, with the winner receiving a $4.5 million payout to go with a five-year Tour exemption, a three-year invitation to the Masters and three-year exemptions to golf’s other three majors. There are also 600 FedExCup points for the winner as well.

Regional restrictions may apply.
