The United States opens the 2024-25 Rivalry Series with a blowout win over Canada, Game 2 on Friday in Salt Lake City

For the third straight year, the United States opened their now-annual Rivalry Series against Canada with a victory, taking a 7-2 decision in the first game of the five-game set in San Jose on Wednesday night. On Friday night, the scene shifts to Salt Lake City, where the U.S. will host the second of three games this week to open the event. The United States got out to 3-0 leads each of the last two years only to lose the series to Canada in decisive seventh games.

The U.S. peppered Kristen Campbell with 17 first-period shots, putting five of them in the net en route to a 7-2 rout of the Canadians. Lacey Eden and Abbey Murphy scored two goals apiece in the romp, Alex Carpenter had a goal and an assist and Laila Edwards and Tessa Janecke each notched two assists. Aerin Frankel made 26 saves to earn the win in net while Savannah Harmon and Hannah Bilka potted goals.

Sarah Nurse and Blayre Turnbull scored for Canada late in the second period after the U.S. moved out to a 6-0 lead. Ann-Renée Desbiens entered the contest to open the second period and stopped 10 of the 11 shots she faced. The final American goal was into an empty net with 1:30 remaining.

It was the first meeting between the nationals teams since Canada won the IIHF Women’s World Championships in Utica, New York, in April. The Canadians lead the all-time series with 103 wins to just 78 for the U.S. The Rivalry Series continues on Sunday in Boise, Idaho, before play shifts to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Summerside, Prince Edward Island, in February.
