Gotham FC and the Portland Thorns will meet Sunday in the first round of NWSL playoffs.

The bracket is set for the NWSL playoffs and on Sunday afternoon, Gotham FC will begin its quest to defend its 2023 title with a game against the Portland Thorns. Portland finished the season with a record of 10-4-12 for a total of 34 points to edge out Bay FC, also with 34 points, for a spot in sixth place heading into the playoff picture. The team’s last regular season game was played against Bay FC and resulted in a strong 3-0 victory. Canadian phenom Christine Sinclair scored the first goal for the Thorns in the 16th minute before American Sophia Smith extended the lead to 2-0 just 10 minutes later. Morgan Weaver added the team’s third just before halftime took place and Portland played strong defense to hold the scoreline for the remainder of the game. Shelby Hogan made six saves in net to earn the shutout.

Gotham finished the regular season with a record of 17-5-4 which gave the team 56 points, closing out the year in third place for the first time in program history. With the strong end to the season, Gotham will not be the underdogs going into postseason play which will be a new experience entirely.

The Bats played the Utah Royals to close out regular season play, earning a strong 4-1 victory to add a final three points to their tally. Yazmeen Ryan opened the scoring 15 minutes into the match to take a 1-0 lead for Gotham and Mandy Freeman struck two minutes later to extend the lead which lasted until halftime.

In the 74th minute, the Royals got on the board, cutting Gotham’s lead in half. Esther González scored three minutes later to put her team in a more comfortable spot. With six minutes remaining on the clock, González scored again to earn a brace in the win.

Portland and Gotham last met in August and the game went in the Bats’ favor with a 2-0 victory. Ella Stevens and Yazmeen Ryan each scored in the win.
