A week after a record 87-point scoring outburst, South Alabama looks for its first win against Appalachian State in a decade on Thursday as the Sun Belt Conference schedule begins under the lights in Boone, North Carolina. The Mountaineers picked up a road win last week at East Carolina and return home tonight for the first time since its season opening victory over East Tennessee State in late-August, while South Alabama comes into this game off its first win of the season after beating Northwestern State by an 87-10 score on Saturday. App State has won nine consecutive Sun Belt openers with the last two coming on the games final play.

The Mountaineers return nearly all of its offensive skill players from last year’s 9-5 squad, including quarterback Joey Aguilar, who threw for 3,757 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2023. Aguilar, the only returning FBS quarterback who had 33 or more touchdown passes and 3,700-plus passing yards last season, threw for a career-high 424 yards in last week’s win over East Carolina.

South Alabama was the buzz of the college football world last weekend with its school-record 87 point scoring effort, the most ever scored by a Sun Belt Conference team and the most points scored by any FBS team since 1991.

The Jaguars, in their first season under head coach Major Applewhite, recorded touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams in the same game for the first time since 2022.

Appalachian State leads the all-time series 4-1 and has won each of the last four meetings, outscoring South Alabama 113-17 in the last three contests.
