The first game of this matchup featured a steady diet of defense for both teams. The Vaxjo Lakers won 2-1 to give the team a one-goal aggregate lead over Sparta Prague. The first period was scoreless as both goaltenders took over the game to keep the contest scoreless. Sparta was the first to break the scoreless tie when the team’s new signee Michael Spacek and CHL veteran scored early in the second period. This game was very much a call and response and Vaxjo proved that when it scored just three minutes later to knot everything.

Sebastian Strandberg took advantage of a great rebound but was initially denied but he persevered and got the put back to tie the game. These two headed into the third all knotted up at one goal apiece and that didn’t change until the 58-minute-mark. Vaxjo took advantage of a Sparta turnover and Felix Robert got the assist to Elias Rosen that proved to be the game winner and to give the team the advantage heading into this Return Game.

Just because Vaxjo won the first game does not mean Sparta is out of this by any means. There is a trip to the Semi-Finals on the line if it can get on the scoreboard early and often to erase this goal differential. The problem is that Vaxjo is second in the league in goals against with 1.78. Either way, it’s reasonable to expect that this will be another close contest for Game 2.
